I had the same problem when my bushing was worn. Replace your bushing.

The one on the bottom of the shifter that slips into the tranny is the most likely culprit.

And they're not listed clearly in either the parts fiche or the FSM. You'll want a new plastic bushing that pops onto the end of the shifter ball (can be gotten in aluminum too), a plastic ring bushing, and a wave washer.

There are matching plastic ring bushing and wave washer on the top half of the big shifter ball, but then you also need to replace the rubber insulator boot to change them. Just buy the first 3 I mentioned, and order the rest if you find the others are damaged when you go to change them. Try to remove (use a magnetic pickup) broken wave washer bits from the shifter if yours was broken.

Can you show pictures of the 3 mentioned bushings please? Are all 3 necessary with the B&M? Thanks.

Call up Malloy Mazda and ask for Ray Crowe. Tell him that you want the shifter bushings because your shifter wiggles. He will hook up up with what you need. They are really inexpensive too. I think it was like 12 dollars for like the 2 of them. I'll bet they are less then 20 dollars.

I think you are thinking of the stock shifter, as the B&M shifter only uses one bushing (the white nylon one on the end of the shifter).

Uhh, you're right. It's not like it said B&M in the thread title...

...oh wait it did....

On second thought, if the shifter seems loose from 1 to 2 or 3 to 4 only, it could be the detente ball springs in the gearbox.

If it's the side-side motion while in neutral, it could be either of the select spindle springs.

But for general sloppiness, it's that cup-shaped bushing at the bottom of the shifter.
