Exclamation Aye carumba, the money spent modding these cars!

For my Haggerty collector's car insurance I compiled a current 'mod list' to include retail prices of everything. For all categories (performance, interior, exterior etc) the grand total came to $34,189! That doesnt even include the complete paint job, or the sweet *** Mazdaspeed Type F red suede seats I have coming in from Japan--those two things crank the price over $40k easily......

I don't even want to think about the total bill for these past 7 years of ownership, all the labor back before I did it all myself, all the little parts that have added up over the years, all the swapping of parts until I settled on a setup I liked. I'm glad that after all this time my FD is just about 'done,' and when I stop and consider I would do it all over again. You can't put a price on happiness !

You choose/agree on the vehicle's worth with the agent. I chose $25k arbitrarily, which is much better than the ~$12k I am covered for now (nada/bb value). It's only $797 for the year for full coverage based on the $25k value, but the deductible is an ugly $1000. I am considering getting a quote for $40k. One other thing I learned from speaking with the agent, as long as your annual mileage is under 5000, you are eligible. They have other rules as well, ie you need a newer (2001+ i think) daily driver, and the car needs to be garaged.

I got the mod bug not too long after I got the car. However, I set some goals for what I wanted as the end result. At this point, I have the car where I want it..............

Now my friend's FD has a street ported motor, and a high flow cat. He's still breaking in his motor. Once that is done, I fear that I may no longer be satisfied with my "end result". I hope I can resist temptation, but I can't say for sure

I just got this car last November and paid 13K for it. I have stopped counting the spent $$s recently at around 24K as I simply don't care to know what goes into it.

Like a poster said up above, it is still cheap when compared to racing cars. Racing GT and Formula Mazda for years on a shoestring budget still cost a minimum of $25K per year. So, now that I quit racing I have all these moneys freed up for FD play things...

Albert

BTW - Rich, indeed your car is gorgeous! It must be worth every penny to just have it there and look at those lines.

you could be driving a C6 Z06 right now....and that has to be more than a little disheartening

I love these cars, but this is the end of the line for me spending large chunks money for a good long time...this motor will last, or I'm done....no LS1 conversion, just sell the car

the Mallet Sky is tempting

I'm assuming that figure includes the purchase price of the car?

I'm confused how $40k in mods will buy a C6 Z06, which retails at $65k?

True as a lump sum, but in Rich's case that's over the course of 7 or so years, not all up front. Much more worthwhile rather than saving 7 years for a car. I'm pretty sure his rough yearly spending on his FD is reflective of what his yearly savings would be for a Z06. I dont really know of anyone that could throw down 50K as a down payment on a car.

Aside from that, good post Rich. My FD meets the requirements you stated and I have a folder with all the receipts for the car. So I'll be giving them a call next year when it comes time to take storage insurance off the car.

nope! keep in mind that this was retail priced for mods, and i included some of the more expensive 'restoration' expenses, such as engine wiring harness and all new 94 interior plastics. I bought the FD back in dec 98 for $18,000--it had 27k miles on it and was in pristine condition.

rotaryfdtt makes a good point, this was over the course of 7 years. Also, I don't want a c6 z06. I find it much more satisfying to drive a fast-as-***** performance car that I almost completely built myself, right down to the engine portwork.

Good information there. I did some rough calculations myself a while back, and came out to a number somewhere around 30k, excluding labor. Sadly, my car is not "done" yet either (if such a word exist, lol). I am however, glad to know that I could qualify based on the criteria you've outlined thus far. I forsee within a month or two, I'll be giving them a call.

Also, I should have stated before that $1000 is the lowest deductible they offer to FD owners, who fall into the 'tuner' program.

^Hey Rich, did you apply your car as a "show car" or something else when doing the application. I'm just gathering up all my paperwork before I submit my application to Haggerty and could use all the help that's available. Thanks.

P.S. - I've read through all of FDNewbie's posts regarding specialty insurance so I do know all that's required to get this insurance.

They checked the 'excellent' box under condition. Show is an option. I am wondering what the difference is with regard to future claims/compensation.....

Thats not too bad IMO. I may be wrong, but I've always considered that most FD owners keep that amount or a bit more in reserve for parts failure, or other maintanence. I believe I could justify such a deductable, if it meant fully insuring all parts/car in case of a misfortunate event. Its only $500 in addition to the lesser coverage I have with State Farm, while giving a greater peace of mind. I'm actually surprised in that for the amount they are willing to cover, that they don't demand larger sums or total payment upfront. I've been told that in NY, you can't insure certain vehicles (high theft or repair cost) unless you pay the full 6 month rate or yearly premium upfront.

I would like to know however, how compliant they are when it comes time to make claims. Pricing vs coverage is definately attractive, but if it doesn't follow through, then I'd hate to be caught in a situation. I guess a phonecall would better answer some questions, but to anyone with personal experience, feel free to provide some information.
