Question Frank | FlyRx7 gauge pod screws

So the screws (are they referred to as "set" screws? what the hell are those?) which are snugged via a tiny allen key (6/32") fell out of my pod somehow. I floored it today in 2nd gear and my boost gauge shot out of the pod Do you guys know what the screws are called and where I can get some? Also, I'm not sure of how Frank did it, but my understanding is that there is just one set screw per gauge hole... is there anything else that sits in hole where the screw goes?

Reason I'm asking is because I tried to screw one of the screws that fell out back in, and I ended up pushing it out of the top of the hole (which contacts the gauge)! So there must be something else above the screw that actually touches the gauge. Anyone have any data on this (length, diameter, etc)?

Another question: I've noticed some lateral movement of the pod when driving over bumpy surfaces (the pod slides side to side, not up and down). Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it (double sided tape on bottom, add material to edge of pod base, etc.)?

TIA

EDIT: For reference, here's his website http://hometown.aol.com/flyrx7/Rx7-Gauge-Pod.html

He talks about "concealed set screw retention" in the "Additional gauge pod info" section of his website. Frank, if you see this post, post here or email me back.

Michael,

Sorry for the slow response.

The setscrews are 6/32 thread by 3/16" long. You can find them at most hardware stores in the little hardware bins. They cost about 10 cents each.

As far as screwing the setscrew out of the insert and into the pod opening, you might try a couple things. Apply a wrap or two of electrical tape to the gauge to increase it's diameter a bit. Center it at 3/4" from behind the gauge bezel.
The retention is the setscrew only, no other device.

You might also try getting 1/4" long setscrews too.

As far as the pod shimmying back and forth, make sure your spring clips are pushed firmly all the way down on the mounting tabs. Later model pods have been modified to help hold the spring clips better.

Lastly, if you have any problem finding the set screws let me know and I can mail you some.

Regards,
Frank

ps: Let me know how you fare.

Alirght, so I bought three different lengths: 3/16", 1/4", and 1/2". Oddly, the 3/16" ones screwed right through the hole and fell out! I can't really explain this. The 1/4" ones worked OK, while the 1/2" did too. I like the 1/2" length, since it's easier to fit the allen key onto the set screw given that it's easier to see the thing since it's so long. And there's no interference due to the length.

However, I still have a slight lateral rattle when driving on crappy roads, in spite of me double checking the pod clips (and pressing them all the way in) Oh well. I'm still satisfied with the pod Frank. It looks awesome

frank, i love my pod, and i appreciate the service and craftsmanship of it!!! i have a question though. . . since theres a thread open on it and it reminded me of the situation. i noticed after installing my pod that it doesnt "press" into the dash. there are gaps all around the windshield side of it. its not real big deal and doesnt rattle at all, but i was just wanting to try sealing up the gaps. i noticed in your pictures that the pod sits nice and snug on the dash. . . any info?

thanks,
paul

Paul,

I believe you have one of the very first pods that I ever made, #8 I believe.
Which means that yours is a 2 clip baseplate instead of the 4 clip ones that are the current production.
Unfortunately I don't know how to remedy your situation, but seeing as I'm still using a 2 clip version in my own car with good fitment, I would suggest that you check to make sure you gauge wiring is not getting pinched between the pod and the dash underneath.

If you cannot remedy the situation and cannot live with the gaps, let me know and I'll make you a deal on a new pod/trade-in, whenever I can get some more done.

Note to everyone waiting for 52mm pods:
The next production run was to begin a week or so ago but got pushed back, again, due to change orders and additional work on my current project.
I hope to start them up later this week or next. Thanks for your patience!

Regards,
Frank
