MANUAL, and don't think about the 5 speed swap unless you get it done by rx7store Cuz it's a pain in the *** and will cost you anywhere from 2000-3500 dollars so you're better of finding a five speed rx7. Especially if you are looking for 400+ hp. Be sure you do your homework before you buy one also. the search function is a very useful tool. Try it good luck and be sure to post up some pics if you get one!

The automatics are not performance oriented. In Supras...they seem to work, but not in FDs.

I bought an automatic, I bought my 7 when I was 16 (payed for myself) and Im glad I did. If I bought a manual I would be probally dead. No scratches or even a ding with the automatic. I want to swap it now though, I wish I bought a manual its alot funner to drive.

you can buy an auto. but change the rear end gears to 4.3. you will like it. mine has a lot of low end torque now. if your not into racing the auto is great.

You should correct your statement to read "if your into drag racing the manual would be a better choice", but from a rolling start you'd better be really good driver (i.e., don't miss a shift and each shift is perfect) to stay with an auto. To say an auto FD is not performance oriented is b.s.

Sure it will.. just not for long . Really, it just depends on your driving style and what your intended use for the vehicle is, drag, street, etc. A manual will not hold any better to 400 hp than an auto if driven incorrectly.

Thanks for the information guys...The intended use of the car is street driving with the occasional viper *** kicking once in a while....The rx7 r1 that im interested in has a little grinding problem when going onto 3rd gear.....What do you suppose is the problem?? The guys told me it was a common problem....

Viper ***-kicking? There aren't ANY FDs that do that, sorry to say. Or not too many anyway. While the FD is a truly spectacular car, it would be an extreme stretch for it to hold its own with a car that in stock form has TWICE the torque. Sure, there are heavily modded FDs that can take on the occasional Viper, then they run up against a modded Viper like a Hennessy and it is all over.

I've got an automatic FD and it is great for me. There simply aren't enough superlatives to describe these cars, manual OR automatic. And there have been hundreds of threads with thousands of posts regarding the 'auto-vs.-manual' debate. But for what you want, I don't think you would be satisfied at all with an automatic trannied car.

There's a montego blue rx7 that kills vipers around my area . . . . but i heard he runs a turbo'd LS1 motor (this is a legend but i hear it from EVERYONE) . . . .

I like my auto. I'm not a racer boy and i don't have the money to track/drive my rx7 hard (parts break). I use it as a daily driver and it suits me just fine. If you like to race/track/auto-x the manual is for you.

Please don't buy this car. If you don't know enough to know that the R1 was NEVER offered in an automatic then you do not know enough to own the car. If your plan is to ruin the car with a "body kit of some sort" please don't buy this car.

As for your question of manual or automatic - that is personal preference but again.....please don't buy this car

Most single cars will run down Vipers. I don't see many twin cars achieving that though. You better be ready to invest some money ($15k+ in mods) to do it.
