Auto vs. Manual
Is there any difference between auto and manual other then the trans? Ecu drive shaft ect?
the reason i ask is because im going to go single turbo and dont think the auto will hold up! i noticed that autos redline at 7 and manuals at 8 is that just because of the trans. or the motor?

built autos can run some of the fastest times. a built automatic can shift faster than any driver and will shift at a consistent rpm. each shift of a manual add's about .25 to .5 secs. on your e.t. unless you shift mad qwik yo!

the stock auto tranny in the fd is weak. probablly wont handle more than 300whp. its the same tranny that was put into the MPV vans, i dont know wtf they were thinking. but if you wanted to drag, i believe level10 (cant remember their name) builds trannys for fd's that can handle some serious hp. 5speed or auto.

Please note that I said build the auto. The fact of the matter is that no human can shift as fast, or as percisly as a computer. If all you want to do is go fast in a striaght line there are high performance auto trannies out there that will work well. You'll never fall out of boost, and most of them have a little lever on them that will let you choose when you want to shift up or down. (Please note this isn't a dog box necessarily Dog box just means straight cut "dog" gears in the tranny. Every SE-R that is fast has dog gears.)
But, the cheaper way is definatly a 5-speed. It all depends on your performance goals. More or less I was just trying to start a war.

I'm simply making the point that the 5-speed is not the Be-all end-all that it's been made out to be. It actually has alot of downsides.

Ah 1984... college done, already been married for two years and oh yeah... that was the year I bought my first RX-7! A brand new GSL-SE ('85 model year). Bought that car instead of a Porsche 944. Since then I've owned two FD's, both 93's. The first was bought new in 93 and was a silver base model with a 5 speed. The second I bought last year, another silver one. This time a touring model with and automatic.
Both are great cars... and don't let anyone tell you that it takes a manual tranny for a car to be a true "sports" car. If that was the case then why would legendary sports cars builders like Porsche and Ferrari (to name a few) be equiping their new generation of sports cars with semi-automatic or fully automatic transmissions? Why do F1 and Indy cars now have semi-automatic transmissions (paddle shifters anyone)? Semi-automatic or fully automatic transmissions can and do out perform manual transmissions on a regular basis. The human mind has the ability to create and build a computer, it just can't out perform it!
With regards to the R4A-EL Electronically-Controlled 4 speed automatic that's in the 93+ FD. This transmission (and I quote from the The Mazda RX-7: Mazda's Legendary Sports Car) "was specifically designed for high performance, front-engined, rear-drive applications". When the last time you saw a high performance, rear-wheel drive mini van?
Flame away....
