Auto tranny power handling.

Basicly iam wondering how much power the stock auto tranny can hold. Ive been pushing 310 to the wheels on mine for some time now and it has been holding fine. Iam just concerned about when I up the boost and push 350 to the wheels if that trannys gonna hold? Anyone have experience with pushing this much power on a auto?

Chuck from Rotary Extreme could shed some light on that. His demo car on the webpage IS an auto pushing 450Rwhp. He really is an inspiration for the rest of us out there looking to get all the potential out of these automatic cars just to prove those manual guys wrong about power.

I am going with a 4.33 ring and pinion + a PCS unit (www.powertraincontrolsolutions.com) very very soon. That unit has proven to be a terrific add-on to both handle the transmission better after removing the stock ECU of the car and also, it handles the transmission so well that people have seen temperature drop on the transmission by 20 degrees.

Ive seen info about upgrading the interior components on the tranny with Level 10 parts to build a "bullet proof" auto. I believe Weaklink has some experience with Level 10 upgrade components.

Any mechanical component will eventually fail, but if its regularly abused, or taken beyond its limits or capacity too often, and not properly cared for - it will happen sooner - that includes manual trannies, clutches, drivetrains etc. as well.

If you want "insurance", replace the components prone to failure with upgraded parts, establish a consistent program of maintenance, use high quality lubes, use dont abuse your vehicle, and definitely take advantage of the knowledge base the forum has to offer. Just remember, there are many close minded individuals that are highly opinionated about the merits of other alternative drive systems. As I say, Different strokes for different folks.

If you blow the auto tranny, it's a perfect excuse to swap in a 5-spd.

A customer of mine had a level 10 trans built for his FD that lasted all of a week. Eventually he had it re-rebuilt at a local trans shop who noted no real reinforcement done by level 10, and a couple of screwups as well. It's currently back in the car working well at this time, but he's likely going to go 5sp anyway. I think the gear ratios for the automatic FC's and FD's suck.

You can pretty much even it out with a 4.33 diff, you get one less gear, but you dont need the 4th that much..

I put the 4.10 in mine and I like the difference a lot. And yes the stock gear shifting points/ratios do suck with the 3.90 rear end. If Im not mistaken, I believe the Powertrain TCU can adjust the different shift points as well as how firm the shift is.

There are a few upgrade options available for the auto, but I have to admit, I do like manuals better. On a positive note, I was surprised with the fds auto setup when I first drove one. From a rolling start, I can stomp the gas and it will burn the tires and go sideways on each shift - 1st, 2nd, 3rd (not using the hold mode). Not bad for an auto.

If your auto dies, it probably is less money to convert.

I've been thinking about converting 5spd also. Anybody know where I can pick up the 5spd parts I need to do the conversion? I can't find any on Ebay, unless I buy a front clip.
