Audio Experts...need FD dimensions...

Hi all,

I am going to install an aftermarket CD Head unit...however, I do not wanna put a subwoofer like I did in my previous ride. (overkill!)

Anyways, can anyone post the dimensions of the front and back speaker area?

I think the rear speakers are a 6.5" fit but I am not too sure.

I have done a search...been looking for hours but to no avail.

One more question: Will I need an amplifier if I were to just go with this setup:

CD Head Unit
Aftermarket Front & Rear Speakers

Appreciate any input!

The rears I believe are 5x7 and as far as an amp goes. I would put one in just to push the speakers all the way.But really its a matter of personal taste. Please submit future threads like this one in the interior/exterior/audio forums area. Thanks

As for the amp question, the FD has a pretty small cabin, but the answer really depends on how **** you are about what you're hearing. Since you're not going to put a sub in (tsk tsk), you can probably get away with no amp, but in the event you want to crank it up, you might end up distorting w/o one. Depending on the power of your headunit, you could probably get away with powering your front speakers (and maybe tweeters) off the of the headunit, and using a 50-100W amp for the rears (since they're where most people bias the fade, and they'd take the most load).

For comparison, I'm going to be installing a system soon and I'll be running the front speakers with the headunit, and I'll be using a 4 channel 150W (I think, don't have it in front of me) amp to run the rears and the sub (two channels bridged). It'll make it nice and clean, and there will be plenty of power to drive everything w/o distortion. Check the audio forum though...lots of info there.

Thanks Pat!

I have been doing my Audio research for the past 8 hours now and I've decided to go with a subtle Stealth Box (I wonder if it's still on now) --> That'll probably cover a 10" Sub alongside with ample space for an amp.

This is what I've decided:

Alpine CDA-7995
MB Quart Front 6.5"
MB Quart Rear 5 x 7"
MB Quart Sub 10"
AutoBahn Amplifier (probably a 2 or 5 channel)

Thanks anyways, I just blew $ 2000 on my setup in my 300ZX...looks like I am heading for another one on my FD...lol

Be careful of depth in the front. The glass is pretty close when down.
I installed MB Quart 5.25 seperates in the front.
Heres a pic.

5 1/4 in front 6X8 in the rear......thoes fit in the stock plastic holes.....u could go 6X9 in the rear if u want to fabricate a piece of wood to hold the larger speaker....as far as the front speakers make sure the depth is not too long because there is not much space in the doors

like jammin said, the door installes are really really tight. Boston Pro 5 1/4s components don't even come close to fitting, as they are way to deep. you could make a custom enclosure I suppose, but you would have to be far better at car stereo then I am to attempt that. hopefully you are going to a good shop, or know good people to do the install.

check out my post in the audio/int/ext for the thread titled "i am looking for pics of custom sub enclosures"

-a simple set up of some quality 6.5 seperates in the front and a discrete sub in the rear, and most will be satisfied. the fd is a great car for building a good sound stage, but a bit of a pain i the **** to move around in the cockpit of. i might replicate the box for anyone who is interested. i will figure teh cost if enough people are interested. it can be configured for either a 10 or a 12'' sub. the box is completely custom, and would probably sell for 300~ per box.

IMHO, if you end up going with the 2 ch. amp, I'd lose the coax's in the back altogether. To each his own, but the important part of the soundstage for mids and highs is in the front, and with the MB Quarts, you're gonna want to push them harder than just the HU will want to. I'm guessing you'd use the 2 ch. for the fronts, right?

Wait, it'd be for the sub, wouldn't it? I wouldn't advise wasting the dough on the Quarts in the front if you aren't pushing them with something other than the HU. Gains down, levels on the source unit up. You'll get clear sound, and enough to deafen yourself quickly also. Front soundstage is everything.

All this also depends on what you're going for and what you listen to. I'm a little of everything guy, so I need clarity for acoustic guitars and serious punch for the hip-hop. If you want SQ, I especially encourage great front soundstage (even if not). SPL, I'd lean toward a lot more punch in the subs and back speaks (I guess).

My $.02
