But what ? whether or not paint cracks on it's own or not on CF hoods? Sorry still not following? And there is already a post in that section about VIS and V style hoods.......If you like it, get it. It's going to be hard for anyone to tell you if we can't see it. Sorry , not trying to be mean just confused

What I'm asking is:
Typically, do painted carbon fiber hoods have any problem with the paint cracking? Or any other durability problems?

All clear now!! I would think that a good paint job should stand up to just about anything. My only concern would be heat, but if you don't have a problem with the stock one I don't think you'd have one with the CF hood.. I also think that in the interior section there is a post about montego blue's with CF hoods. They look pretty sweet!! MB and black are the only ones I think that plain CF looks good on! IMO. yep.. its all about prep.. I painted my Faspac and it chipped a bit..but that's normal for any CF/FG related products..

But prep and types of primer will help greatly.. well, thats what I been told..

I'm curious.. is there any difference in how much a fiberglass hood will chip versus a CF when they are both painted? How about cracking? Does either material seem to hold paint better?

When cf/fg is painted it should not chip or crackon its own, unless under extreme stress. If you are having problems with this, then it would be due to improper prep work, some release agent still on the part or paint mix probs..bad batch, not enough flex agent etc

in my experience carbon doesnt hold paint as well because you are painting directly onto the epoxy or polyester resin where on fiberglass the top layer is gelcoat.

I still don't understand why people paint "wet" carbon hood's... Fiberglass is almost as strong, almost as lite, and it's ALOT cheaper...

When you don't have an unlimited budget, Carbon does not offer many solutions that fiber glass doesn't offer nearly as well. People like carbon for the BLING factor. We use it a lot on our race car and I'd be much happier if we replaced it with aluminum and fiberglass, some guys on the team are just jazzed about carbon for typical reasons.

One problem with painting composities if you are making it yourself or it was just made is outgasing. The outgasing can make bubbles in the paint. If you are ording the hood from someone, this is not a concern of yours.

I'm thinking that CF will expand and contract at a different rate (and amount) than metal. Durability will depend alot on the type of paint, catylists used in the paint and (as already stated), the prep work. I've been away from that business along time, but I do recall there are flex additives that might be helpful. ISUposs...I will check with the painters at my brother's shop and see if they have any experience with CF. I'll let you know.

Any decent cf hood should also come with a gelcoat.

a clear gelcoat? i thought most manufacturers just leave out the gelcoat rather than going through the trouble of using a clear one.

So the question is...

Does Mazdaspeed still make hoods? Are they $2500 or so everywhere?

Do any of the Mazdaspeed style replicas fit well?

Jeff, you should look at Ati-hun's hoods. I have heard nothing but good things about them.
