Mazdaspeed vs. knockoff hood fitment

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a real Mazdaspeed hood, I'd prefer an original hood but I'm considering a knockoff seriously.

Does anyone have a knockoff Mazdaspeed hood? How does it fit. Is it stiff enough so that it doesn't fly off at high speeds?

I'm looking for opinions, and I'm ONLY considering Mazdaspeed or a direct Mazdaspeed knockoff, not something that is close or just anyone's vented hood.

I'm not concerned with the fabric layup, I'm going to paint it. I'm not into the red car/black hood look.

TIA,
Jeff

I've got one of the eariler made FG Mazdaspeed replica. The only part where it doesn't look "great" is the upper bends on each side as it goes to the windshield area. Those are a little uneven however when it's on the car it's not noticeable. I don't have it mounted or painted, so I'm sure a body shop could easily make that area look better..

As far as them flying off? lol, I've yet to hear of anyone having the Mazdaspeed, Scoot or other replica hoods flying off. However, one of the guys local to me who has the Scoot replica does use hood pins.

Thanks Mahjik!

As far as the hood flying off... Are you aware of the recall on Mazdaspeed hoods? I don't think Mazda would recall the Mazdaspeed hoods if there wasn't a problem. I got a mailer a few years back and Mazda has flagged all FDs so the dealer can look for Mazdaspeed hoods.

Jeff, the Atihun hood has received many good reviews. Here's the link:

Yea, that was a latch problem if I remember correctly. I'm almost positive that the replicas are made from the FIXED version of the hood. I got that recall notice many years ago (since I've had this FD for 7+ years) and the replicas have only been around for maybe 2 years. You should be just fine.

I have a fiberglass replica on mine and it fits quite well actually. The finish isn't perfect, but I only notice anything in the garage under flourescent lights. It does work quite well though. I feel the hot air being pushed out by the fans. Click on my www link for pics.

My friend had minor fitment problems with a VIS nothing major but he did have to elongate one of the holes to properly mount the hood (even gap).

Took him about 15 minutes total.

I have a replica.
Fit is good. Slightly off on the corners near light covers.
But really not noticeable enough to care.

Fd3BOOST,
In your ad for selling your hood, you mentioned that some of the paint was cracking on the hood. Was this your fault, or does it just happen w/CF hoods?
I found a local guy that has a replica MS hood for a pretty good price. He says he test fit it on his car and it fit pretty decently. (I kinda know the guy so I don't think he is BSing me) He said the front edge sat a little low, but he didn't know if that was because his car had been in an accident or if adjusting the hood latch up a little bit on the car would help.

I like the vented hood, I am just concerned about durability and how it'll look in a couple of years.

Also, my car is montego blue. Any opinions whether I should paint it or not? I'm kinda neutral on "showing off" your carbon fiber. At least it's a dark color, and I suppose if i don't get it painted, if I decide i don't like it, i can paint it later.

Ok, enough rambling to myself

Oh yeah, I think this is the hood he has:

I went an looked at it today and it appears to be decent quality and fairly straight (smooth finish, no ripples)

Thanks

I think this is pretty true about lot of CF and FG hoods.. Depend on your vent opening, you might want to put a set of hood pins..

I had a CF faspac hood.. w/o the pins, I could see the hood flapping at high speed.. the thing is that hood latch is bolted to the CF/FG.. which isn't as strong as attatching it to metal.. at certain pressure, it will pop right out..

Scoot and RE type 9 on the other hand have huge vents.. so pressure can't not built up as high.. I recently installed my Scoot and taken it to 140+ and didn't see any vibration.. So I decided not to put the pins.. it just look cleaner..
