Question is the AST needed??......

hey
i have a 13b running stock twin turbos
front mount intercooler
catback exhaust system
induction kit
& Apexi PFC

i hear mixed rumors about the AST tank

some people say you have to have it on the car

some other people say you can bypass it & remove it

can anyone shed some light on this for me please??

any commments would be much appreciated
thanks

if the radiator is mounted in angle, such as in Mazda Stock FDs, yes you do.

if you have front mount and radiator is vertically mounted, AST is not required thus can be bypassed.

There is at least one link in the FAQ thread stickied in this forum that will answer your question. Check it out.

And that link will likely say you CAN get away w/o an AST. It is just a little harder to bleed air from the cooling system than it is with an AST.

^Agreed. And if you get one of these it makes it easier when you change coolant ---> http://www.amazon.com/LISLE-TOOLS-24.../dp/B001A4EAV0

How do you use that funnel? Do you just put it in the neck, pour some coolant in, start the car and let the air bubble out? That always seemed so dangerous to me.

Dangerous? I've done it (using the lisle kit) at least two dozen times on my FD alone, not sure how many if I include other vehicles, don't know what I did before I was pointed to this wonderful tool!

It works so seamlessly, and you've bled the air out of the system before you even realize it, by far one of my top 5 best tool investments EVER, right along side my k-tool hose clamp tool.

Doesnt the hot coolant over flow ALOT and just spill over the funnel?

That's the difference with this funnel - it seals to the filler neck, and, unless you get the engine boiling hot, there is more than enough volume in the funnel to avoid that.

what he said, out of the many times I've used this funnel I have yet to have that even come close to happening. The worst that has happened to me was the engine rocking to much while starting and sloshing some coolant around, which really isn't the funnels fault :tonque.
