Assistance on Engine Removal

I got an Automatic FD and this is my first engine removal.

I'm a little stumped on what to do considering that my engine won't come out.
Pretty much the transmission is still stuck on the rotary housing.

This is what I have done so far:
  • Remove the Airbox, Battery and Hoses.
  • Disconnected the AC Compressor, Power Steering, and Starter from the Engine
  • Removed the Transmission Bolts. Two on the Top, two on the bottom, one from the side above the starter
  • Removed the 4 bolts from the flex plate underneath the car
  • Disconnected the downpipe from the midpipe
  • Disconnected the ECU and all the Harnesses on the engine, or the best to my knowledge anyways

btw I was using the factory service manual and some guides on this forum and on the internet to do this engine removal

any ideas? oh and i've been tracking my progress on my blog if that helps with the description on what I have done.

Have you released the clutch ring? I'm not sure if it's on the automatic one, but it's on the manual one?

You also have fuel lines on the driver's side, motor mount bolts and oil cooler(s).

It is a auto you will have to disconnect the torque converter from the flywheel which you have done. Try spinning/pushing the torque converter farther back into the bell housing of the transmission.

If you need tips about disconnecting the auto transmission, you might try PM'ing bajaman. Haven't seen him on in a while, but he might be able to help.

Hey

I just got done doing it to my car so ill give you some tips.
-You can pull the engine harness through the firewall (too late for that but its about 10x easier when its out of the car to take apart)
-Dont forget to disconnect your oil cooler/atf cooler lines/power steering lines
(i pretty much go by each system to make sure its all disconnect ex. cooling/spark/fuel/power steering ect)
-Make sure you get all the grounds disconnect.
-Dont forget the heater hose coolant line.
-Throttle cable
-Driveshaft (disconnect it at where it attaches to the Differential then pull it out of the tranny its super light for a driveshaft) Unlike a SR driveshaft or a RB god those are heavy.

Thats about all i can think of. GL its alot easier if you got some friends that are mechanically inclined to help.

Do you have the auto tranny supported? It is usually really easy to get the auto trans to come apart from the engine. You may have it at a strang angle making it difficult to disconnect.

First of all...there are SIX bolts...not five. One of them can only be gotten to from underneath the car, coming in from the rear using a LONG extension with a 14mm flex socket....this is the ONLY way, trust me. I will bet this is the bolt you are missing. It is on top and is a real bitch to get to. Once you get all the bolts undone you have to have the tranny jacked up to where the top of the bell housing is right against the firewall, then you have to use your hoist to get the engine up off the mounts to where the studs clear, THEN you can wiggle and manuever the engine off the little dowels that hold the transmission to the engine. It is a bit of a bitch...and putting it back on is far worse....lol! The trick is getting that angle just right. I followed the ROTARY AVIATION video myself.
Good luck!

dangit it think you might be right.
I think i found the bolt, is it kinda below the split air pipe? on the passenger side?
if it is how did you reach it from the bottom? did you remove anything? cause the downpipe is in the way for me.

You have two options, you can remove the UIM and gain limited access to it from the top, or buy 2 18" 1/2 drive extensions and get to it that way. If the car is non-sequential it takes all of 3 minutes to get to it from the top, if it is still sequential with all emmisions which I am sure it is, it is just easier to get it from underneath.

3/8" drive will also do it. I just put several extensions together and I have more in that size.
I have also gotten it from the top with a flex-head ratchet-wrench on a friends single turbo.

djseven and Sgt. Blue are correct on this.
I took the intake off and it simplified things greatly.
Good luck!
