Arggh! Turbo gone...suggestions???

Supposedly on a mechanic test drive they heard a sound and realized that apparently the compressor nut came off and my primary turbo is now gone. I have never heard of this but they are old turbos and I have been running a little hard since my rebuild. I had a boost leak I believe but they otherwise seemed fine to me..

Question #1 : Anyone ever heard of this happening?

Question #2: Regardless, I have to do something now if I want to drive it. I'm debating whether to rebuild the turbos, go to "high flow" twins, or just go to the Apexi RX-6 turbo.

Mods in signature. I had really wanted to get the car tuned as tightly as possible to see what I could get out of it before I started with MP and Single Turbos....

And although my sig says 17psi, that was one day weeks ago. I have limited it to 15psi. Hard yes but I wasn't having this problem in the weeks leading up to it.

Any input would be appreciated.

I have never heard of anything close to this. The compressor nut came OFF?!?!?! I'd be a little worried about what other damage happened when the compressor nut supposedly came loose. Definitely get your mechanic to inspect the compressor wheel. If the blades shattered and/or chipped severly, you may have metal shards INSIDE your engine!

Chances are, if your mechanic's story is actually meritable, those turbos are beyond repair. They can still do a number of things to rebuild them; but I guarantee you'll never be completely satisfied with a rebuilt set. Go with new turbo(s). You pay for it up front, but it will save you in the end. And from the looks of your sig, I don't think you're all that concerned with how much new turbo(s) cost.

Be sure to clean the inside of all the pipes and innercooler to bet any shavings out. when a nut comes off the wheel may slip on the shaft and not grind up to much. the nut may still be found on the intake side. good luck

Have you actually seen it? You don't have to take your mechanics word for it. Pull off the intake elbows and look your self. If the nuts are still there, turn and run away from your mechanic. They should not tell you that crap unless it's true.

He wanted me to come down there and look at it myself so I'm sure it's either true or else it would have been made to look true. I'm inclined to believe him but it's frustrating that it didn't happen in my hands. They are pretty well respected around here.

He is using other turbos he had (not mine) and having them rebuilt, the intercooler flushed out, etc. I'm hoping to have it back shortly and for about $1,400. That sounded reasonable to me and I don't have the time to screw with it. Single turbo would likely be 3 times that.

I decided I just want the car working and well tuned with what it has now before I make any further major changes (like single turbo). After some datalogging and some dyno runs I'll decide if I need more power down the road. There's been quite a bit done in the past 4-5 months. I want to get that solid before I sink any thing else.

Thanks for all the input.

well we used to have 3 used cars , one had 2 accidents no airbags peace of ****, and one day one of them broke down it was a '92 mitsubishi diamonteh, well i liked it even though it was old , so we went to mitsubishi dealer to buy it 2002,new, anyways we came out with 3 cars and a really good deal, i am paying for the diamonte but the eclipse and lancer i got 0-0-0 no payments for a year, so i still got like 2 months
anyways now i am interested in a FD, to build so if you have them , do you have site? how can i get info??

Just FYI ('cuz I've been going through the same pains over the last few months):

Rebuilt twins - $800-$1100
New '92-98 spec turbos (Mazda USA) - $3500
New '99 spec turbos (Mazda Japan) - $3000-$3800

The rebuilds can vary in terms of what they actually have to replace/fix. Supposedly, Mazda USA has bumped up their prices on ALL parts because of the recent discontinuation of the FD3S (in Japan) ... so that $3500 price may not be accurate. Wholesalers can get the '99 spec turbos and the price range generally reflects how fast they get the turbos through customs. Good luck.

Thanks. He quoted me like $900 for the turbos themselves and I'm guessing the rest for labor. The good thing is supposedly I could get the car back Saturday afternoon maybe which would be very nice.

dave dont get too excited about saturday
I mean keep it in the back of your mind but dont be shocked if its not ready then.
sorry about your problems with the car....The inside looks really nice and the motor is going to be strong for a long time. Get the outside all caught up with the rest of the car it is a huge sleeper right now a hibernator you could say.
be patient I have faith that the shop does a really good job and doesn't rip anyone off. They sometimes aren't good in time estimate situations since they have so many cars to work on and just a few people to do it with. I am really happy with my car and dont see myself going anywhere else but I also hope that it wont have to see a mechanic for anything major any time soon.

Yeah, I won't be shocked about Saturday but it would be nice as Sunday will be the only time I can play with it for another 10 days. I trust Scott but like I said its still frustrating when something blows up with someone else driving.

Glad you like the inside. It wasn't cheap because I had broken some parts as well but it was awful before and really needed it . I still have to do the seats and mount the Commander better. I thought the gauges turned out nice.

I agree about the exterior looking like crap but my parts simply aren't in completley. I wound up cancelling my orders for just about all he Amemiya parts & wheels and the Feed wing because I ordered them in July and they still weren't in nor could I get a set time when if ever they would be, now there's a strike... Meanwhile I had paid...I'll probably paint it and put the Scoot Hood and Front bumper on in a few weeks but I want at least the combo lights and had hoped to get side skirts/spoiler as the hood may look too aggressive without some more body parts. I'll settle for just the lights and oil cooler ducts coming in.

Yeah I would feel just the same way if they found a problem while they were driving it. Thats why I bought my car with almost everything on it needing to be replaced that way I wasn't in for any surprsises. I wonder about shops taking advantage of people especially people like you and I. (younger kids-me and people that have tons of money-you haha)
About those turn lamps if you want the best deal and you want them fast and haven't ordered them I'm not sure if I told you but put canman6969 on your buddly list and email him. He can hook you up. Don't rush everything just let it come together slowly. I had my car painted over a month ago and I still haven't had it buffed of had my front bumper repainted and still don't have the turn lamps. Still havent cleaned my wheels or the interior. I'm just waiting for it to come together slowly and plus I will appreciate it more when it's done.
The guys at the shop told me how much it cost to get the interior like that HOLY ****!

good luck with the car get it back and put it in the garage stop leaving it at shops while you are all over the world or they may get the idea that you like it staying there and find more problems
