Apexi Catalytic Convertor

Hi,

I've been looking at the Apexi Japan Website and I see that they make a performance catalytic convertor for the FD RX7 (although it seems there are two models which is curious).

Has anyone seen one of these or bought one?

Secondly on kind of the same subject do Racing Beat make a Performance Cat as well?

Looks nice! Pricey, though - I agree, SMB is a great way to go. I LOVE my SMB high flow cat.

Oh no. That SMB System looks very nice!

I think I need to have the whole system! lol

Does anyone know the sound level difference between the metallic substrate converter and the free flow cat?

Get a dynomax uni from summit for $60 you cant go wrong. It even comes with the option of with air tube or not for you guys still running the smog pumps.

I just saw a magazine ad for Pacesetter metal core cats. It's a new product from them.
I went to their web site, but they don't have them listed yet so I don't know pricing or specs. The ad says 20% more flow than ceramic.
I would like to replace my stock cat with something light weight, higher performance and inexpensive. Wish in one hand.....

These metal cats are becoming more prevalent. They certainly flow better. Im going to put two of the low-cell-count metal cats in my midpipe with an airpump tube....when I am summer rich again.

hey while you look at that pic it shows the air pump line... i got one question if the air pump is removed and that line is still there is that bad?

Well its a signifigant exhaust leak. Its not necessarily bad...you just have to find a way to cap it with a material that will not melt.

I'd really worry that cheap ones wouldn't hold up to rotary heat. I've seen MANY cheapo Catco cats that had totally failed within a short time. That was on light-mod '86-88 NA RX-7s, too - imagine a fire-breathing FD!

This is one of those things where it's worth paying extra for quality.

There is a check valve in that line to only allow air into the cat (and not back up the other direction). As long as the check valve is still in place, there is no problem.

My SMB cat failed after only 1000 miles... The metallic brick came loose inside and seemed to be in two pieces. It was during an engine breakin period, though, and I was running rich as hell (but low boost).

all i did was remove my air pump so i guess the cheak valve w.e that is, is not letting the exhust back up.... Thanks for the info

I made very low power on a dyno after getting my new engine and turbo in and tuned. I think it robbed me of 60 rwhp or something.
