Anyone Ever Imported an FD

Ok i have an 88 Vert FC and want to make it the Summer season DD. I also want to import an FD to make a show car/weekend show off car. It will be a project car that won't matter if it runs everyday. I slightly mentioned this in the FC forum and got flamed to hell so if your going to flame keep it to yourself. I was wondering if anyone has imported an FD, what they had to do in order to import it and make it "legal", and who did it(what company) for them. I am also in PA if that matter to anyone.

If it will never be driven on the street, it is entirely doable... legally. However, if you want it to be street legal... you're S.O.L.

Do what that one guy at sevenstock did, disassemble the car and ship it all in pieces back. And rebuild.

Yea that is my problem. I want to be able to drive it on the street occasionally. Does anyone know why this can't be done?

I can be done legally, but it is a laborious, lengthy process that will probably cost north of $100k - and really makes no sense for a car that is already available in the US with the steering wheel of the correct side of the car for the market.

And despite pretty much all sellers of these cars claiming legality, no one has every demonstrated a legally imported one. The usual trick is to illegally register in a southern state with sloppy registration procedures (usually Florida); a more creative trick is to import the car as a kit.

Search for 'RHD importing' for many threads.

FAQ question #12:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

Short answer is no, don't import an FD unless you want to risk having it seized and crushed by customs, you don't mind going thru gymnastics to get registered, and you don't mind committing federal fraud.

ok thanks for the help. I think im just going to buy a FD that needs work. I have found these for $5k-$8k online. Most of the problems are interior or lots of small things. I only wanted to import because it would be less than $10k for a nice FD.

There is no such thing as a nice FD under $10k.

Have you seen the price of interior parts?

And lest anyone think customs doesn't crush cars, I know someone that recently pulled some parts from a JDM FD that customs crushed here in Portland.

If you want an imported FD this will help...

do what i did to get mine. go to www.tyeeimports.com . they're located in Campell River, British Columbia, Canada. go to their website and u can select which car u want from either their inventory or their brokerage page. they all have exterior and interior rating so u know ur not buying trashed rex's. and tyee does ship cars across canada, im not sure if they send them into the usa tho. but u can get a non moded FD for as low as $8900 or get one thats been moded (like mine) for $12,000.
what i did was i put a deposit to hold my car so no one else could buy it, and as soon as it came in i went and test drove it and fell in love and bought it. but if it comes in with problems then u get ur deposit back, easy as that. oh and they do all the customs BS and that sort of thing so all u do is go shopping! hope this helped buddy

I know you can register canadian vehicles in the us. What if you imported it to canada... and then got it registered in the us... ? Would that work?

It will not. The laws restricting bringing a car from Japan are the same as those fro bringing a car from Canada.
