Any one want a 96+ FD3s?

I'm not sure but I am in the deciding factor on wheather or not to import some Newer Jspec Fd3s mainly 98-2000 models and make them streat leagle how many people would be intrested?

Please do not actuly get your heart set on me doing this as It is only in the decision making proccess and I need to review all the DOT and EPA rules to make the car leagle. Also California will not allow any cars newer then 2 years old allowed to be imported.

first, get your facts straight beofre thinking about importing anything. the magical number is 25. a car must be 25 years old or older in order to get in headache free. a day less than 25 years old, it will be the biggest pain in the ***! do you know how much is cotsts to import a Lancer EVO VI??? NOT including the car, your looking at $15,000 for everything. customs, testing, modifications to be legal in the US, registration...everything.

if importing cars was cheap, you would see tons of Skylines, Silvias, FD's, and Lancers by now.

dont try it. it is not worth it. i know first hand. it is not worth the headache.

Check out this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=35969

He actually imported a couple of cars including a 96 FD (<25 years old) and from his post it doesn't seem like it's as hard as everyone thinks. I think it might depend on which state your in though...

Hmmm, yea, but why isn't that person trying to get newer FD's? If it were that easy, there would already be tons of them. How many people here wouldn't sell their 93, 94 or 95 FD for a '99 or '00 model?

Seeing is believing, and I think it's much harder to get these cars imported than what that other guy believes in that thread.

Well, the reason *I* wouldn't do it is because it's right hand drive.

Yes, that's part of the import cost that JoeD was referring to up above.

importing FD

Crackers- The other thing you may want to consider is the amount of documents you will need to complete correctly. You have seven incorrectly spelled words in your post- wheather, streat, leagle, intrested, actuly, proccess, leagle- and even given the casual nature of on-line text, this does not bode well for your success dealing with the US and Japanese officials who will examine your applications and documents. Just a thought. Hope *I* spelled everything correctly .

If you're a Mazda Motorsports team support member(racer), what's to prevent you from ordering the engine for "off-highway use only"?

You guys dont know too much about importing? Its very simple to do. Mainly because I am a military employee. But for you non-govt workers this is all ya gotta do. Have it imported in to canada. You can then drive it right across the border without ever going thru costoms ect. I have done it with a few cars. Did it with my porsche, if I would have imported into the states it would have costed my a fortune to have all the stuff fixed for states standards.

how do you get it insured to drive across the border?

There are tons of websites on importing cars from the Japan, everyonce and awhile I stumble on websites of people doing it.
These people must be cutting some type of loop hole.....

ronarndt,
Not to be an ******* or anything but I think you make a pretty dumbass statement about his spelling. This is a freakin forum this isn't the damn registration papers that this guy is worrying about. Come on give the man a break, he is just trying to hook us up and you gotta go and be stupid. Damn go to a grammar critique forum for that crap. Anyways I think it would be bad *** to get anything that was related to the J-spec FD's over here, even just the motor. Good luck, and if you can get them, don't worry I don't think there will be a shortage of buyers. Maybe I should proofread this reply so someone doesn't make fun of me

Well I assure you I am not going to do it by driving it over the border. For 1 thing you could not get it Titled or insured legally. you would have to claim the car as an older FD and hope no one finds out. Now as far as going through Canada It would be faster due to not having the DOT hold and restrictions and EPA checks.

I could on the other hand get a few of the engines across with out any one finding out and put them in. It would on the other hand be only maybe two or three with out getting found via the government.

Now, I know that there is alot of things that will have to be done to make the car 49 state street legal [-California]
I do not plan on making it Left-hand-drive either. so don't ask =]

I can not quote you a price for how much it will cost to import. I can warn you It will not be cheap as you have to pay for the cost of the car which is brand new so look at close to 40k for the car alone and then after paying for transport, all government checks and then I have to spend some hours converting it. I could put a pinned number somewhere in the 50k mark.
Please do not be discouraged as I am just putting down a number that I think is roughly around the cost of the car and expense

One last thing. With this car being sold on the US. Market at one time I maybe able to do it crap load cheaper and Shadier

Ohh and the spelling and grammer part I understand your conserns that is the reason My brother MR. grammer and spelling will handle most of the paperwork. =]

Ohh and I knoticed on that other thread listed here about someone wanting a Supra also. Yes that could be done also..

Like the thread listed Reason I chose the fd3s instead of a skyline is the fact they were on the US market and essential the same car.

P.S. Rember I am in the stages of considering doing this. It will be another 6 months before I say yes and get it started =]

Darn paperwork

It would probably cost more than 30k to get a '99 FD here and get it legel to drive.

40,000 sounds high for the domestic price of an fd. maybe here in america after import taxes, tariffs, whatnot.

I duno you could be right Im not sure what a brand new rx7 would cost in japan so it would be the baseprice of the rx7 plus the import cost.

I just threw some numbers your way

Just an esitimate, but a new Type RS would be around:

4,385,810.00 Japan Yen

which would be around 34,950.80 USD

So, estimate a few thousand cheaper so around 27-30k for a '99 maybe.. That would be without any import costs, and other costs to actually make it legal in the US.

That would equal one expensive car when it's all said and done. As much as I love my FD, I'd just pick up a new Vette for the price it's probably going to cost to get a new one in the states and legal.

Better yet, import some new/lightly used RX-7's. I was browsing around and found this dealer. How can one not drool over his inventory and prices?

Let's see...he's got a '99 blue RX-7(RB-S package?) for ¥2480000 ($20,000 US) here

Oh look, he's also got a white '99 RS for the same price here

He must have over 30 FD's available not couting any of his other cars like the Supras, Skylines, etc. Here's another '99+ RX-7 he has for even less( a bargain ¥2380000!!!)

Japan list price is 3,848,000 Yen for the RS or $30,780 US(125yen/dollar). The RB list price is 2,948,000 Yen which works out to $23,584 US.

Thanks guys, hell that brings the price down dramaticly.. I wasn't sure what they went for since I rember in 1995 when I was a youngen and couldn't drive but still liking rx7's and them being 40+k.........

I do know that the main thing that will have to be changed will be the Air bag as for some reason the deployment of the airbag is diffrent then that of US.Spec so I'm hoping that it will be just a simple replacement with the miata airbag. Not sure See there are so many things for me to figure out. Thats gonna be the same as getting the supra over here. =(

Well like I said if i were to get these It would be to oder and what ever you want used or new... =]

importing FD

DHALL- Appreciate your comments. I believe Crackers understood the intent of my post, which certainly was not to make fun of anyone. Importing a car is a paper transaction with the detail oriented, career paper pushers at US Customs. I have shipped and received medical supplies across the US border many times, and depending on the customs agent who handles the transaction, something as simple as a space on a form not checked or a poorly worded entry on the shipping manifest or other document will place your material in customs never-never land. Once this happens you can be SOL, because these people have almost absolute authority as to whether or not they will release your shipment. To even think that filling out the paperwork properly is not important is a big mistake. In the case of a car, you will probably start to incur storage costs per day for each day it takes to submit a corrected piece of paper to the customs god. Best way is to go over everything written that will be submitted to customs with a Webster's dictionary in one hand and your college English teacher looking over your shoulder. Crackers- hope you are successful getting an FD into the US. The new body style alone would be worth it. You may want to check with a freight forwarding company to get their assistance. I have used them several times and they can take some of the headaches out of the process. Don't know what they would charge for a car- I paid 15% of the insured value of the shipment last time. If you need the name of a company I have had good experience with, PM me.
