I'm us Army so the military will pay for the shipping of one car to my home of record/new duty station... all I would need is for you to pick it up and do the paperwork... tell me what needs to be changed and I can do it here myself before I even ship it..

The $8,000 was to pick up the car from the port, convert all items to US Standards, & storage for 2 mos to complete all inspections and paperwork...

Not that I want a new FD, since I've replaced my engine and modified mine, but I'm curious as to what all you would need to do to make it OBD II compliant?

Crackers,

Just to let you know. You're going to have one hell of a time trying to get a Jspec FD into the US. Let me help clue you in with the task you are trying to do.

1) You have to get the car through customs. This may sound easy, however, there is a lot of paperwork involved to get the car through them properly. Also, TAXES! There are taxes placed on probably everything that comes through customs. This is coming from the customs department itself. If the car is not meant to be driving on the street...it better not or else the car will be immediately seized and crushed!

2) You'll have to pass emissions (this is from the federal level...not including the state level. BTW, are you planning to make the car 50 state legal or only certain states because everyone also knows that CA is the most stringent.

3) Here is a possibly circle that may cause you to stop your endeavor.
You may think that you don't have to crash test the car on the basis that there used to be FDs sold in the US. Ok, fine. However, in order to get pass this obstacle, you will need to assure the DOT (I believe it is this branch that will deal w/ this part...if not, then it is another branch...maybe the NTSB) that the LHD FD is the same as the RHD FD (I'm talking about the new FD being equal to the old FD). This is the stinker...in order to bypass this process, you will need a letter from the manufacturer (Mazda) certifying that the RHD FD is the same as the LHD FD. Mazda has already told the DOT that they are NOT equal. So from that sense, Mazda has already screwed you over. Try to convince them to write you a letter saying that they (Mazda) were previously in error and in fact the RHD and LHD are equal. Good luck.

3) From here, you will need to go to each states requirements.

Assuming that you decided to follow the route that MotoRex did...meaning become an official importer of the newer FDs...you will have to follow their footsteps. Although I assure you that their procedures are proprietary and they will not tell you how they got the job done so do not bother calling them to ask for that info. They will laugh in your face if you ask. MotoRex had to crash test 4 Skylines. Do you have the financial resources to do the same w/ 4 FDs? MotoRex also had to register the Skyline engine (RB26DETT) into the federal listing because that engine was not previously listed. Sure the new FD has the same basic engine as the US one, but can you prove it? That is at lot involved w/ registering the engine just to let you know. MotoRex also has to make reinforcements to areas involving the frame/bumper. You will have to do the same, however, keep this is mind. My understanding w/ the crash testing (during 93-95) was that the FD barely made it. That is because of the largely aluminum construction (I could be wrong about this statement regarding the crash testing). From here...it is basically what I stated above. MotoRex also gets the smog equipment required for the vehicles. You will also have to do the same.

Good luck.

Ok
lets go from this step by step

1. I have the import side taken care of As my uncle is the president of a big Import/Export company that has big name accounts. Sony is just one to mention.

2. As far as selling to califonia that is useless because any car newer then 2 years old cannot be sold/export. If you would have read this entire thread you would have realised that I understand the emmisions point of view.

3. Its the NHTSA that is going to be the most stingent as i understand I do on the other hand am waiting for mazdas conforming letter. I know that it needs to be modified but it is not like motorex were the car needs to be crash tested.

You act as if you think I care about motorex. They brought in a car that was never brought into the united states before. I give them madprods upon doing so as I love skylines more then I love FD3s but the fact is their price is rediculous as it doesn't cost them more then the car is worth from Nissan Japan to convert it over. A 40k car from Japan and them selling it for 95k? well I think its a tad bit to high allthough If i had 95k to waste away I would do it.

Now, you stated I need to crash 4? well for your information you are wrong. it would only be 2 for that mater if the first 1 didn't pass. allthough I wont have to worry about that. Ohh by the way reason motrex crashed 4 was because they have 3diffrent body style skylines they imported.......................................... ....................

I dislike your presentation towards my conserns of importing a jdm FD3S as Like i stated in this thread I am considering researching and problemsolving all the details involved with doing this. I am sorry that you do not have the ability to read all of the statements I have posted to anser everthing before you posted this. Also it seems a tad bit on the "I'm mad because I can't do what he may do side of the story"
and the statement on "Let me clue you in with the task you are trying to do." is an insult and not appricated as I have read more then I wanted to ever read about doing something before.

Good luck to you on your name that you coppied from Fast and the furious with what ever vehicle you may own.

By the way everythign you read on the internet isn't allways true.

First off, don't insult me by saying that it is a copied name. My god given name is Dominic. I was here months before that movie came out so DO NOT insult me by saying that I copied that. I don't insult your name so DO NOT insult mine.

I am not mad, I am just stating the facts that I know. I am not familiar w/ the amount of cars that need to be crashed, but that is what MotoRex crashed and I was using it as an example. Just as a note, I happen to be friends w/ MotoRex so I am familiar w/ their general procedures. They are a VERY good example for what a company needs to go through to get a vehicle properly registered for legal US operation. I am not trying to make it sound like I am better than you in any manner whatsoever. I was merely stating the facts or general info that I know. How you "read" the wording is your interpretation.

I did skip the majority of that post because for me, it got too long. As I said before, how you "read" my wording is your interpretation. I'm sorry if you found my words possibly "harsh", but I was just trying to let you know of the information that I had.

Like I said before. Good luck.

I agree I was being a bit towards the strike at your throat as I was not in a good mood. The way you presented your information made it sound like I shouldn't even try because motorex is better then I am. It also sounded like I was ignorent and didn't know anything.

I am sorry and I exsept your applogy As i stated I have alot of information and working on possibly importing a few. I haven't decided upon wether or not I will be selling them like motorex does. It may just be for me and my brother in law

I could right now get two in with out even lifting a finger and it be titled and driveable. but then again its not """leagal""""

BTW, I am also on the Freshalloy forum (Skyline area & 240SX area) and I do know of the rather interesting post made in the Skyline area.

It's cool. Good luck to you guys. There are a couple of Lancer EVOs in the country currently, but those remain the few (as an example).

There are some holes that you may want to try using. One of them is the way that Bill Gates tried w/ importing a Porsche (I don't know the specific model) over to the US. There was another entreprenuer that beat him to getting the same Porsche over, HOWEVER, that other entreprenuer will remain the only one w/ that Porsche because after the one was certified to be legal, there was a reevaluation and no more have been allowed.

Dom,
I think what you're referring to w/ regards to the Porsche is the two (that I know of) 959s here in the U.S., owned by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. These were allowed in on the basis that they have special historical value (my words, but you get the idea) so they don't need to pass emissions or crash testing (etc.), but I believe the mileage they can be driven is very limited. Wish I had more details but thats the gist of it.

Crackers,

I think you're on the right track and I wish you the best of luck. Put me on the list of those interested. I think if you can get it figured out, your best bet would be to arrange financing for 20 or 30 of them. That way you'll get the most bang for the buck out of all the certification work. Then, by working with a real Mazda or other exotic import dealer, you could look at selling some very unique vehicles. However, for this type of clients, you're going to need some warranty type guarantees.

Bottom line, put me down for one and I'd be happy to look into financing when the time comes. I've pondered this a bit myself but didn't have the head start that have.

Good luck,

hey i may be interested in doing that same thing as dragon (jspec 93-95). is there anyway you can tell me a little more about the pricing and what all you would have to do? i have a friend going into the navy so it may be able to get it shipped back for free.

Please visit http://www.j-garage.com/imports as this site actually imports jdm cars into various countries. Here is the disclaimer about importing to the U.S.:
If you are in the US :

Firstly, the Japanese specifications (JDM) vehicle is a Right Hand Drive model. And it is difficult to import it into the US at present.

Unless you wish to present crash test data for any Right Hand Drive car, it cannot legally be imported to the US. And we do not support to present crash test data.

It is possible to import of JDM cars under regulations regulating these cars to race(competition) use only.
Race cars cannot be registered for street use.

As for the Skyline GTR, it is possible to import the only Skyline GTR into the US for street use.

Also, it is possible to import the old JDM vehicle (25 year or old) into the US.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Also visit the customs website and you will see that this would be extremely involved!

Back from the dead... You know guys, you could just take a Series 6 chassis and convert all the parts over to Series 8 specs, that would be 99% legal and it would a heck of a lot easier. If I had $50k to blow on a stock FD I'd just take a blown '93 base model, strip it, paint it, then import a junkyard '99 model and take all the insides out and put it into the '93. Whatever is missing can always be ordered. There wouldn't even be a need to reregister the engine since even after all the upgrades from S7 and S8, your average smog shop still won't be able to tell its not a stock engine. Then you can get a '99 nose, wheels, spoiler, and whatever else you want and basically there you have a '99 car. The harness and ECU and everything are all different, but as long as you have everything theres no problem. The only tricky stuff would be getting the ABS unit to work on the opposite side and the other minor parts that are reversed.

If you did it, I would look into buying one. Maybe I could sell my soul for one, and then I would have to learn to shift with my left hand. I could definently afford one in a few years, if you were still selling them at that time. Josh

Taking the RHD/LHD issue out of the equation. If you could find a cheap wrecked US car that you could strip the Interior and the ID Tags (VIN). You could possibly re-tag the imported car as the wrecked one, how do they know you didn't rebuild it.

Very few inspectors would know the difference.
