Another fan swith mod SWITCH question

I think I'm set with how to wire up the fan switch mod. My question has to do with the switch that is used. I have the options of either using an extra fog light, or extra defrost switch. The fog light switch works like you push it on, & it stays on until you push it again off. The defrost switch, when pushed, gives an on signal, then goes to off.

My question is, with the fan switch mod, do you need to have the constant ON signal, or do you just need the initial ON signal? Sorry that this is confusing, I'd rather use the defrost switch if possible, but don't know if the switch will work. I'm thinking it would, because the fan just needs the one ON signal to tell it to turn on, it doesn't need a constant signal telling it to turn on... but then again... what do I know?

I am just trying to wire the switch so the fan stays on for 10 minutes after the engine is turned off.

Just do the Miata/FC Thermoswitch mod. Better and doesn't require you to remember to turn on/off the fans.

I thought the fan switch mod worked like: you turn the toggle switch on, fan runs for 10 minutes & turns off...

I was planning on using this mod when I turned off the car... let the fan run an extra 10 minutes to help cool things on, then the fan shut off by itself... maybe I misunderstood this mod...

I thought there is a loose cable behind the computer, when you ground this cable, the fans come on, & stay on for 10 minutes then shut off...

Someone please correct me...

Dude, why don't you just modify your PFC to turn the fans on earlier?

The fan mod switch you are trying to install is a great mod. You will need the fog lamp switch. The defroster switch won't work. You simply turn on the switch whenever you want the fans to come on. There is a two minute delay, and then they come on at high speed. When you shut the car down, you will have three options. Option 1: Simply turn off the switch right away, and the fans will turn off. Option 2: After shutting down the engine, wait 30 seconds before turning off the switch. This will drop the fan speed to low, and keep them on for 10 minutes. Option 3: Leave the switch on. This will keep the fans on high speed for 10 minutes, and drain you battery over night. You will most likely have a dead battery in the morning. Option 3 is generally only used when you forget to use option 1 or 2 .

I purchased an FC thermoswitch a while back, but have not decided about installing it yet. I really like to be able to turn on my fans several minutes before I reach my destination. By doing this, I can always shut my car down with coolant temps at 180. I think this is much better than shutting it down at 210 (which the FC thermoswitch will do). By shutting my engine down at 180, I don't feel the need to run the fans after shutdown any more.

In addition, at smog time, I like my engine to run hotter. A hotter engine will have a hotter cat, and will have lower emissions. With the FC switch, the engine won't get as hot as it was intended from the factory. I believe that the ONLY reason that the FD runs hotter than earlier RX7's is to pass smog.

I guess I misunderstood the mod a bit. I thought that when you took that loose wire & ground it, it would kick on the fans for ten minutes. I was thinking to only use the mod once I was done driving; turn off the engine, hit the switch, which would ground the wire, which would kick on the fan for 10 minutes.

I'd done the fan mod switch and after killing a battery a few times I disabled it.
When I recently rebuilt my engine I bought the FC thermoswitch and have been absolutely amazed at how well it works. This, in my opinion, is by far the best thing to do.
What is 'cool' (heh heh!) is that with this mod I can pull into the garage, and if the car's fans are not running, I know it is pretty cool anyway. And if they are running, I just let it idle a bit until they shut off, and I know the coolant has dropped its temp to a civil level.

If you install the switch, you can cool your car to 180 before you shut it down. Then you won't need to run the fans .

Yeah, I actually wasn't aware of the FD thermoswitch mod... but what I thought (although apparantly wrong) was that I could use the fan mod to turn on the fans to add air circulation to the engine bay once I was done driving the car... I figure the more air circulation the better...

I wonder if there is some way to do what I was thinking... hit a switch... which activates a timer... which would run the fans for a set amount of time after the engine has been turned off...

would coolant temps really affect EGT's that much? i would also think that a cooler engine would burn fuel more efficiently... the cooler the intake charge, the denser the air, and the more air there is to mix with the fuel.

The hotter the engine, the hotter the cat. A hotter cat will always burn cleaner. We are not talking about efficiency, we are talking about clean emissions. Hot is cleaner. For example, a stone cold engine is about the worst polluter you can have. That's why our cars came with precats .
