Altenator driving me nuts!

Ok guys I have searched and nothing relates to this weird occurence. My alternator kicks in and out intermittintly. I just had it rebuilt. I took it off and had it bench tested they said no problems. Here is what is happening. It works fine until the car is fully warmed up. Every time I hot start the car it does not kick unless I rev the engine way up. Even sometimes this does not work. It will just pop on and off at random. The belt tension is fine. Wiring seems to be fine. I do have a power pulley but never had this problem when I first got it so that is not it. I think one of the brushes gets hung up at random. Maybe a shitty rebuild? Also with all my lights on and when I step on the brake pedal; say at a stop light at night the car wants to die. Like it is over drawing power. No lights on during the day and evrything is fine. Step on the brake no effect. Do you think a ground kit would possibly help this problem? I have my idle set at 1000 and my lights still dim at idle and get stronger when rpms go up. I know a 12 year old wiring harness is not the best. Thanks for any insight. Garret

Do you have any ignition amp, like the hks twin power or crane hi 6? I had a similar problem and bought the hks twin power and an apexi grounding kit and have had no problems to date.

Check the wiring between the alternator and the battery. Sounds somewhat similar to a problem I had and I found out that was the cause 2 alternator rebuilds and a grounding kit later.

Did you find a bare spot in the wiring ? I have my battery relocated to the rear bin. I will check thanks

I had my alternator rebuilt by a reputable place locally. It worked fine for ~6k miles, then it began to do exactly what you described. I had it bench tested by 3 various sites, all reported that it was fine. I ended up replacing the alternator w/ a reman from Mazda (through Ray Crowe) and it resolved the problem. Good luck

Thanks for the info. I am going to swap it out w/ a buddy of mine. To see if the problem persists. If so I will start digging into the harness. Garret
