Yea I didn't think it sounded too safe, but again, that's what I had heard...so it did have me kind of worried, since I wondered about the same scenarios you mentioned... That's good to know, Jeff.

 

Sorry man. I hate the FD airbags. In my opinion they are plain dangerous. I think it is safer to disable the airbags in the older cars. Supposedly the newer generations deploy less violently. When I totaled my first fd I spun it on some ice and off the side of the highway. Hit a bunch of small shrubs and a fallen tree hit the fender which caused the airbags to go off. The front bumper was untouched. The airbag ended up scratching my cornea but luckily it all healed in a couple weeks. I'd consider picking the car up from you for parts, but I am not looking to spend much and don't want to low ball you because you have a decent amount of aftermarket parts on there.

Worse. If you wear metal-rimmed glasses you can shish-kabob your brain, let alone shatter glass/plastic in your eyes and bust the bridge of your nose/eye sockets. Think about hand position on the wheel also. It's easy to compound fracture your forearm/wrist on your forehead or shatter your watch on your skull if you don't keep the hands at 10 and 2. The FD full-strength airbags deploy at over 250 mph, burning/producing sodium azide gas to inflate the bag at 700f!

 

Damn dude, glad you are ok....Looking at the damage it doesn't seem so bad and hard to belive that you are hurt so badly from it. Were you wearing your seatbelt?

If my memory serves me correctly, in this case, it wouldn't matter whether he was wearing his seatbelt or not, because it wasn't the airbag deploying on impact that hurt him...it was that the passenger side airbag deployed by itself, so he turned to look at it (obviously out of wonder/curiosity), then suddenly the driver side airbag deployed, catching his left eye.

 

Ouch, Yes the FD airbags deploy very violently, and only deploy with front end collisions. I have never met one face to face but when i get rear ended which bent my frame the airbag didnt deploy. But i know people that have tapped someone only denting the bumper and airbags have deployed. IMO airbags hurt more than help

 

Well I finally sold the car so I am saying goodbye to the fd community , thanks for all the great help guys and galz and maybe I will have another fd, with a aftermarket steering wheel and no air bag . Also a update on my recovery I am perfectly fine but have glacoma in my left eye. Lesson to all please stay somewhat away from the airbags cuz I was to close and if there is any way to tell I am 5"11 220 pounds and dont sit close to the steering wheel so ya.
