I would buy the factory wiring manual at the very least. It is very comprehensive.

I could not find any how-tos when I looked a few months ago when I wanted to diagnose some problems with my stock alarm which is located in CPU #2 in the driver footwell. Turns out an aftermarket alarm that was on the car was installed by savages and most likely caused CPU #2 to fail.

Aftermarket alarms will typically need to splice in to the wires coming from CPU #2, which contain door/hood/hatch signals. The factory wiring manual will give you the location and colours of these wires. You will obviously need a pretty comprehensive manual for the alarm itself to tell you what connections it expects to be made.

Personal opinion, but I would not bother. Alarms are useless in preventing theft by a professional and have been for decades - they are a very successful marketing scam. On an FD there is a good chance that an aftermarket alarm will interfere with the stock alarm and cause random electrical gremlins which are not fun to track down. I had remote start on a car once and got bored with it in minutes.

i didnt buy it for the alarm, or even the remote start. i bought it for the keyless entree and the fact that my car has been hit 5 times while parked in 2 years. With this alarm installed the two way remote will page me and ill find out how quick i can do the 100 meter dash with a bat.

Hey (it's Mike, right?)

Honestly...I'd just have it done once and done right...take it to the Glen Burnie Tweeter in MD, and have Nick do the install. Shouldn't run you that much for the install...plus if something doesn't work right, THEY have to fix it, not you scratchin your head wondering what you did wrong and where...

BTW, Nick used to be on the forum a few years back and had an FD, so he knows the cars very well, and is someone I'd def trust w/ my car. He did my audio/alarm stuff.

You will have to add an actuator to the drivers door to take advantage of the keyless entry feature of your alarm. I've done a bunch and unless you've done it before I'd recommend taking it to a nearby professional. You could spend hours just getting the actuator installed in the door. JM2C

I just finished installing a universal keyless entry kit on my DD. Installing the actuators isn't that difficult, but from what I've read the cables used in the FD locking mechanisms are easilly broken by the actuators, so be careful how you set it up. As far as the wiring goes it's not the easiest thing to run it through the door, but still do-able. My friend linked me to a site that had wiring info for all cars (it was a pay site he still had a membership to). It told us the wire color and location of every wire we needed to tap into. A quick check with a multimeter confirmed all the info was correct. I'll see if I can get the info for an RX-7.

I also seem to remember reading a write up on this by zerobanger, so search around see if you can find it.

EDIT: NM you can't search . Here's the link:

Hey Mike -

Great choice on the alarm. I got the Matrix 2.5 (no remote start or turbo timer). I had mine installed by pro's, and am so glad I did. Just bite the bullet. If you bought the alarm from an acutal retailer (versus off the net) then the price includes install.

Mine was done by BestBuy in Gaithersburt and they did a great job. You will have to pay extra for the actuators though (15 for each door I think)

Thanks guys,

Ive been to numurous shops looking at getting it installed, but havent found anyone i would trust with my car yet. Although ill look into Nick at tweeter, that sounds like what im looking for in an installer.

I bought the alarm from a friend who worked at best buy (in gaithersburg non the less :P) cause he got it on a manufacturer special to employees. I think i paid like 140$ for the thing. I planned on installing it, but when in dumped out the box it kinda scared me away from doing it. (not that I didnt think I could, just that I didnt want to deal with the hell)

anyways, thanks much for the links and info, ill reconsider getting it installed professionally.

Mike

Mike, IMO, the most important thing is someone who's familiar w/ third gens, for the simple reason that those who aren't end up breaking all the clips in the door panel, and you end up w/ all these misc. screws afterwards, cuz they're trying to fix the damage

I had Nick install an alarm on my car for the exact same reason as yourself: keyless entry. Don't really care for the alarm per say. He did an excellent job, and if you'd like to check it out sometime, lemme know. I'm only about 20 min from Gaithersburg. The # for that Tweeter is 410-863-0300. Just ask for Nick, tell him Ramy w/ the RX7 referred ya. I'm confident he'll do the best job, and to your satisfaction. I'm INCREDIBLY **** about every small detail, and he had no prob accomodating me (even small stuff like I didn't want a secondary LED...so I had him wire the LED light signal from the aftermarket alarm into the stock "Security" light in the center console) etc.
