Air pump removal question?

It's time to change belts... is it okay to take the airpump off If I already took off my cats and replaced them with 3" pipes for both the down and mid.

Yes, you can remove your airpump if you have a mid pipe.

If you have an aftermarket ECU, open exhaust and never need to worry about passing smog tests, then by all means eliminate the airpump. You can also eliminate the ACV, EGR, their solenoids, and some pipes and hoses that are rendered useless without the airpump (of course some might argue that they were useless even from the factory).

so you can't put on a pulley kit unless you have a down pipe and midpipe or you will get boost spikes?

You don't need a pulley kit to eliminate the airpump.

Boost spikes are caused by overloading the wastegate (i.e. opening the exhaust and intake too much). You combat boost spikes by porting the wastegate or restricting the exhaust.

And what's the point of installing a pulley kit on a close to stock car? God, what a waste of money....

To reduce pump cavitation. Granted, this only applies to a very limited number of owners but ya asked.

Which only happens above 7k rpm......this is never a problem except in a "road race" type of track event.....and I've never seen anyone post anything comparing coolant temps at the track pre/post underdrive pulley install.

Well, according to the Mazdacomp catalogue, above 6000 RPM (but who's counting - when I'm up there I usually don't have time to watch gauges anyway).

Just got the Greddy pulley kit... It takes about 30 minutes to install (Including the front belt as well) It took me an hour from start to finish because I had to run to discount auto parts to get the front belt. It does come with a belt that is only big enough to take out the air pump. sO if anyone gets it and the want to keep the pump they will have to get two belts for replacement. It also comes with japanese directions (easy to follow from the pictures though). This was the easiest evolution I've ever done on my RX-7. Finally a mod that isn't a pain in the a-s!

I must say that there is a noticeable difference with the pulley kit installed! It is awesome!
