air-pump question.

ok....yes this is a stupid question...and yes I know I might be flamed for this...but I honestly cant remember. Is the metal portion on the front of the air-pump on the pulley suppose to spin? I noticed that when I turned the bolt on the front of it it turns freely...so I wasn't sure if it was a sign that the pump was bad. And another question. I know that its for emissions...but in florida there is none. Do I still have to keep the air-pump until I get rid of my cat or can I just eliminate it any time? Basically will it screw with my motor?

Just in case here are my mods:

*Pettit Racing 1.3L 13B-REW street ported engine w/3mm apex seals.

*99' J-spec ceramic coat, ported and blueprinted twin turbos.

*NGK leading and trailing platnium plugs.

*10mm Magnacore spark plug wires.

*Upgraded Goodyear boost and vacuum hoses.

*Pettit Racing cold air intake.

*Pettit Racing 3" stainless steel downpipe.

*Pettit Racing aluminum coolant AST.

*ACT extreme clutch.

*Pettit Racing 8.5lbs flywheel.

*Pettit Racing 60/40 short shifter.

*HKS Super SEQ BOV kit.

*Koyo radiator.

*RX7 Trix battery relocation kit.

*Blit Dual Turbo Timer w/harness

And a slight coolant leak that is slowly pissing me off.

yes it is souposed to spin it stops when you give the car gas though. And yes you can remove it you just need the block-off plate set. rx7.com sells one

I guess that means its bad. Can I just bypass the airpump with a shorter belt? Or do I need a kit to do that. I thought the black off plates were just for single turbo upgrades...just wondering...?

If you have the stock cat. you want to leave the air pump on. The cat will clog without it. Once the stock cat is gone or replaced with a cat that doesn't need air, you can remove the air pump, but unless you have a PFC the car will idle poorly. I used a Greddy pulley kit to remove my air pump - that is, the kit comes with the proper belt for the smaller pulleys and no air pump. That belt is available from rx7.com, but I don't know if it will work with stock pulleys. I don't think you can get a proper length full width belt in North America if you remove the air pump. Many use a 4 rib belt. If you search you'll find lots of posts on that.

I didn't have the PFC when I removed my airpump, and it idled poorly. I had a mid-pipe then. When I installed the PFC it idled perfectly (and still does).
