Air intake Thermosensor Install

Does anyone know a secret for changing the air intake thermosensor without removing the UIM? I have searched and read about heating a wrench and bending it, but is this the easiest way?

Any information would help!

Just take off the UIM. I don't see how it's possible to replace it without doing so, as it's connected to the underside of the UIM.

Cody! whatup.

Your going to have to remove the UIM.
theres about 3 connectors to unhook when pulling off the UIM. Not too mention some other little connections.
Probably a 30min job at most.

You will see it directly underneath the UIM in the middle. Simply unscrew it (maybe 12mm?) and install the new one. Also check the wiring.. it might have melted due to the heat.

p.s. I got my motor out.. droppin it off this Sat.

You may want to think about relocating it to the elbow, if you have a greddy one.

thanks for all the replies............like eric said it took me about 30 minutes yesterday.......the car is rtunning great, but i am doing plugs this weekend. Since my thermosensor was bad, my car was running extremley rich. This probably was not good on the plugs.

Let me know what you think,

Yep always helps to change the plugs.
Cody,
Check out O'Riellys, they get them in the same day that I call for em. They were cheaper than my shop discount at Mazda (no real suprise)

Eric,
Should i run 9's for all four plugs? Or stick with the regular setup.

I've been having similar problems, but only when it gets real hot, never when it' cool out. Just want to confirm that it's the thermosensor, can you tell me what where all the symptoms...Thanks

Panda,
Are you showing any engine codes. If its your thermosensor it will show a "code 11". Mine was bad and made my car run very rich. I would be ok whe nthe engine was warmed up to normal temp. But after driving on the highway it would start to bog because of too much fuel.

Eric,
All i have is downpipe and i have modified the stock air box with a drop in K&N filter. What else could i do before upgraded ecu?

After changing the thermosensor, my car still is running rich. It ok when i first take off but once driving it a few miles it starts to smell like gas and i have very little boost. Can this be a bad spark plug?

Check the AC fuse.. your airpump might not be coming on... the airpump should be on at Idle, up to 3750 rpm
And check the airpump relay

less air in the combustion chamber due to pump not working = too much fuel = fowled plugs...

I'm not saying that that's definitely it, it was just a very difficult to track down issue with mine... except we couldn't figure why the dammed relays kept on malfunctioning... then we figured out that turning the relay box upside down for the V-Mount IC install was catching rain / carwash water in it, and water + relay = Busted !

air pump nevers pumps air directly in chambers. it will indirectly richen the mix a bit by choise in only one case ... cruising at light load, closed loop, with air pumped in exh port before the o2 sensor to fool it.

'no pump' will stink things up, and may use less closed loop opearation, using default richer maps. mabe this foulded the plugs?

Ok, I just checked the ac fuse and it was good. I aslo checked the connecter/wire harness and it was good also. Any other ideas of what this could be.

sounds like you f-ed up a gasket when you put the manifold back on.....try spraying some carb cleaner around the uim-lim meeting point and other places around that and see if the car stalls from idle. That is exactly why my car smells like gas under boost....until wed. rolls around.
