Gasket is fine....but my air pump is making a weird sound when coming off boost. I will look more into it being the air pump. I have rough idle and a little bit of backfiring. I am also going to do pugs this evening.

I could be wrong but it really doesn't sound like the air pump, mine has been disconected and not working for a long time. Sound like a vacuum and boost leak to me. When do you smell the gas, all the time or just under/after boost? Where do you smell the gas...exhaust engine bay pass cabin?
specifics, specifics

Thanks for the replies

In the morning I will let the car warm up to normal operating temp. Then once i take off it spools and boost amazingly. Then i drive around 15 miles on the highway to work and begin to smell gas and lose boost. I smell the gas coming from the vents inside. Once i get to work, i shut the car off and it backfires slightly and i can smell gas from the exhaust as well as under the hood. The map sensor is hooked up correctly.

When my thermosensor went bad is when it started running rich. This was causing the plugs to foul. I changed the sensor but did not chnage my plugs. I will do them this evening and see if thats the cause.

My only mode is a downpipe.

Thanks,
Cody

I have the same exact problem...it also only starts after the engine has warmed up fully after a good 15+ minutes of driving, other than that it runs very strong and smooth. BUT, mine turns on and off...meaning once it starts running rich, it does it when it wants to, from running rich to running okay, back and forth...

Also, I found something interesting, usually I run with the parking lights on to have the fans turn on sooner...when the rich problem starts the fans DON"T come on!! When it stops, it comes on like it's supposed to. There's a connection here...does that happen to yours Cqbtf?? Thanks!

You only need a low-profile socket to remove it. No need to take off the UIM.

Or an angled-head box-end wrench would probably be more appropriate, as the wiring for the sensor could present an issue with a socket.

Ok, here is an update. I changed the spark plugs on saturday. The car pulled very strong on the first take off after the car had warmed up, but once I drove for awhile I am getting the same symptoms as before. Smell of gas, and seems to losing boost. Also when under the car changing plugs, I notice my secondary turbo has an oil leak. Could this be my problem?

Any help please???????

Becareful with that fuel smell.
Check FPD and smell for fuel near the injectors and FPD

As for oil around turbos. I haven't seen a car with alot oil coming from the turbo oil return lines.
Prolly just needs to be tightened.

If Im in town on Sat or Sunday, cruise by the crib.

pitz, take off the UIM. It only will take you like 30 minutes to do.

Eric,
The fuel smell is very faint and is less than before i did the plugs. I might need some help on checking out the FPD.

ok i really need help on this situation. I am at a loss of whats going on. I am still having all of the exact same symptoms (loss of boost, fuel smell, backfiring, bad gas mileage). Once again, the car boost very strong on the first take off, but after driving for awhile i have very low boost. What could this be?

backfiring and loss of gas mileage could mean very rich.
The fact that you smell fuel too could be that an injector is stuck open?

I have setup Side Feed injectors Testing at a place in Midwest city Cody. If you feel like taking them out, we can have them tested for $10 per injector. It will eliminate that as the problem or determine it as the problem

Ok a little update, after talking with Damonb. I have checked the voltage running to the AIT sensor and am getting a strong 5 volts at start-up as well as after driving for awhile (when the problem starts). After looking around under the hood i noticed the wire for my autotranny water thermoswitch is loose from the connector (see pic)
https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2232079

Can this be my problem with the loss of boost after driving for awhile. Also, did i mention i can start the car up and let it warm up to normal operating temp, and the first time i take off its amazing. It boost fine and pulls very strong. Then i get to the stop light and take off again and have very little to no boost.

Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, remember I posted that I had a very similar problem. Well I fixed mine after a lot of research. I took a chance on the water thermosensor and it has never ran better. I also changed the water thermoswitch with the miata one while I was at it. Man I was sooo happy. Fixed my horrible problem with about $50 bucks for both and an afternoon!
