Jumping on the AEM bandwagon
I think everyone is a bit scared to be the guinny pigs, thinking the outcome will be similar to the Apexi Power FC.
Off the bat, there seems to be advantages: 16/32 bit (8 bit on Apexi US version), onboard dataloging (seperate for PFC), Knock control (PFC does not control knock), plug-N-Play (PFC claimed this but had to clip wires).

I'll be a guinea pig =o) after my pocket heals a bit from my recent expenditures.
Race version is basically a wire-it-yourself AEM unit.
It'll include a harness with flying leads.
PnP version is a "plug and play" version that'll use the mazda ECU connectors on the AEM unit so you can re-use your stock wiring harness.
I believe there will be base maps for the stock twin turbo set-up. Guys like myself will need to figure out our own single turbo maps.
I believe some third party slips in schedule (i.e. Mazda ECU connectors) delayed the product. I'm sure Jason can speak to the reasons aside from preparing software, etc.
You can use the AEM with automatics. You'll need to contact AEM to see if base maps will support automatics right now. I've seen the options for automatic transmission and it seems very capable.
The only thing I don't like so far about the unit (I don't have one in the FD... yet) is that you'll need to wire in resistors to support low impedance injectors. Wiring in the series resistors is easy, but I would want better injector drivers for the hardware.

i haven't even used it.....it's just been sitting around collecting dust. There isn't any difference between the "race" version and the others. You just get the EMS, the plug and wiring. I just never bothered to install it.....along with the PFC that i've had since it 1st came out. I've been too busy with other stuff to get the car running
When it's all said and done the car will be renamed the "money pit".
I just spent another $2k and change for the axles, gears, and KAAZ LSD.......will the madness ever end???? Doubt it!
