Advice on RX7 Spec - NA Engine
Hi
I'm looking for some advice on an RX7 1994 were looking at buying.
It has the NA Engine, and so far all I can find is conflicting opinions on it. This is the full spec below I'd be grateful of any comments as my technical knowledge is pretty poor.
Defi link Module
Defi Gauge Oil Temp
Defi Gauge Water Temp
Defi Gauge Oil Pressure
Triple Pod Cluster
Short shift Gears
ENGINE
NA Engine fitted
HKS Mushroom Filter
RE-Amemiya Exhaust
RE-Amemiya De-cat
RE-Amemiya Dolphin tailpipe
Samco hoses
Twin oil coolers
HKS F-CON GOLD ECU
SUSPENSION and BRAKES
Aftermarket Suspension
Front Strut Brace
Rear Strut Brace
Battery Relocated to Boot
All abit of a mystery to me, if any one could advice what bhp, speed you could expect out of this that would be really helpful.
It's purpose will be a weekend car, attending shows etc rather than day to day or major racing..
Cheers
CC

I think you'll find it difficult to come up with numbers because the 3rd gen rx-7 was never sold in NA.. so it's hard to tell exactly what you have there. I don't think there is a lot of information on how well the stock computer is tuned for running solely NA. I second the request for engine bay pics. Maybe we can pick out some clues.

Surely it is a p-port of semi p-port or something. I know the 13b-rew is unreliable and all but not so unrealiable you would be happy with a 165rwhp engine swap
If it is a properly built P-Port then jump all over it if the price is right. I would love to have a 2 or 3 rotor p-port NA fd.

Thats a first. Never knew they came in N/A.
The closest thing I can think of is when driving with a massive boost leak and the turbos not working....it just doesn't go anywhere.

Getting some pics hopefully today
I've requested some engine bay shots so should be able to post them later today.. I'm still trying to get hold of the dealer, and Dragon Performance to get the true details from them but seem to be struggling to get hold of them.. I didn't realise an rx7 engine could this mysterious...
It's driving me mad really want the car but want to know what i'm buying and what I can expect from it. I'm only 24 and blonde ;-) so the fact that it's not a turbo is probably a good thing but need to know what it's capable of..
Another rx7 owner told me this on the engine -
"well tbh is a n/a motor and im told its a periferal(sp) port with 400fwhp. this will be a pain in the *** to drive and expencive to fix if/when it goes wrong."
But what that equals in speed and hp I'm still confused
Will post the pics as soon as I've got them... Hopefully that may clear things up..

RHD Track Whore
^ ^ don't take anyones advice who says RX7 and fwhp (front wheel horse power) in the same sentence.
Why are you buying this car? You don't seem to be very knowledgeable about RX7's or cars in general for that matter (take no offense to this).
Why not start with a stock RX7 and not waste $20,000 on a car that you don't know anything about. Then at least you know what you're getting.

uhhh... ok... yeah thats not a lot of power... and its not going to make a lot, you've got a low comp engine without turbos on it... i think you might be making like... 160 to the wheels? maybe a little more?
If they built it right, they should have broken down the block and went with higher compression rotors and ported the block...
IMO i wouldnt buy that car... it doesnt sound like a lots been done to it save removing the turbos...
and are the windshield sprayers ziptied to the windshield wiper?!

I may not know a lot about them but that doesn't stop me having one, and the reason for my post is so that I could find out about it. . I want the car because in looks it's what I've looking for..
Problem I have is that a standard car doesn't do for me in looks but the moded cars that are nice in looks have to many engine mods for me to get insured finding the right balance is difficult..

If you're really set on buying this car, or indeed any RX7, try getting someone who really knows about these cars to take a look at it first as well as doing some research yourself. There are some very knowledgeable rotary specialists around, when I was thinking about buying my car the garage I was buying it from took it to a specialist to check it out first with me present. The specialist (RX Motors in Dorset) ran compression tests and checked various other things and confirmed that the car was good. Put the time in first to make sure the car is good

Why?
Whats bad about it apart from the loss in power? Does it give any other problems or benefits..
I know your not liking the loss in power but for me thats not an issue as i won't be racing it and like i say ins is cheaper but what knock on effects does it have if any other than that or added benefits I would assume the loss of the turbo's would make it more ecomical no?? Would it have any effect on the engine life?

If it's stock or street ported, the engine will last longer, burn less gas, and run cooler. If it's peripheral ported, it will still run cooler and last longer but the fuel economy, noise level, and emissions could get ugly. P-ports are essentially race engines. It won't idle smooth and low like an ordinary engine.
The downside is that you've taken one of the purest of sports cars and essentially crippled it. Those 40lb wheels don't help either. It's your choice - don't let the kids in here rain on your parade.

I can understand buying the car for the way it looks and I agree it does look great. I can also understand you not necessarily wanting a high horsepower car. Just be aware of what you may be getting into.
FWIW, I like the idea of buying an RX-8. It is going to be reliable, easy to find parts for, under warrantee, fun to drive, easy to insure, easier to have maintenance done on, and much MUCH better for a daily driver if you need one. It may not look as cool, but given time there will be added body kits available for it as well.
