Well i did this and let me tell you its not that easy... I went and bought me some threaded stock, about 3 foot long or so from Home Depot or Ace Hardware... been awhile. Anyway, i figured i would drop the cat at a hobby shop and just knock it out. Well i dropped the cat and took the cat behind a building because people who worked there knew i was up to no good. I then rammed the stock down into the cat and *thud*. Im thinking... So i keep doing it and doing it and ... you guessed it... doing it and after a while of that crap i broke through!! The stuff that comes out looks like a honeycomb and it takes awhile to knock all that out, so be prepared to take some time doing this. It was louder and seemed to give me some free horsepower too. *TIP* you might want to plug up the tube going to the cat, or it will blow **** all under the side of the car.... not fun to look at or clean either. Good luck and go get that stock!!

Gutting the precat is a different story. You actually NEED to cut the thing open, scoop the insides out, and weld it back together. The insides is a metal mesh that can NOT be simply punched out.

I have done it, and its hard to keep them still.

Just kidding. I did what Flybye said, cut it open with a metal saw, and pulled out all the crap. The honey comb is easy to get out, but the metal mesh is another story.

You cannot torch the thing open without splattering the cat all over the place. (I am still talking about the precat). There seems to be two different types of metal mazda used in the outer skin.

W/ the pre-cat ( I would assume main is same), I had a friend w/ a Plasma Cutter cut it open, I gutted it, then he re-welded it. If that is the rout you take, make sure he can weld good. NO LEAKS! Doing my main cat once I get my primart turbo to boost. Don't forget EMS, you need more fuel to run w/ a gutten cat.
