advice on a buy

so im not sure what to do here. i found a really nice 3rd gen w/ 71k miles selling for 12,900 but it's auto.... I HATE AUTO! my 88 gtu is manual and i couldn't imagine myself without one. I honestly don't know what to do though b/c i don't know the feel of an automatic rx7.. it must feel totally different... probably not as fun. I really love the car (ive been waiting to get one for about 10 years now) but should i still pay for it even though it's auto and then do a tranny swap at the rotary mechanic.. or keep waiting for the impossible manual low mileage 7 to show up ?

ps.. i might trade in my gtu

You answered your own question there. I wouldn't get it.

Why are people so hell bent on a low mileage FD? Find one that is in good shape interior/exterior, and has a freshly rebuilt motor (done by someone VERY reputable), and have a blast. Check for leaks and rattles and make sure things look up to spec.

I personally wouldn't pass on one if it was what I wanted, except for high mileage. I've seen FD's with higher mileage in MUCH better shape than FD's with what's considered "very low mileage".

Pineapple street polished & ported
3mm apex seals

just wait, milage isnt that big a deal, I would worry more about how the previous owner took care of the car, and also to do a manual swap is a PITA...

i guess you guys are right...i don't know too much about the previous owner and the dude who's selling it is a like a psuedo-dealership/salesman/"broker" ... i guess im just a stickler for looks... which may explain why i only date the hottest women and get hurt every time

this car is perfect though besides the transmission

They made R-1's in an automatic? Or is that a base with R-1 front and rear spoilers?

That's another thing to consider, which model do you want? I lucked out and found a touring model the color and setup I wanted. It was also the first one I looked at

Wow. Are you trying to justify this car to yourself? You wouldn't have posted about it if you were 100% sure. And seeing that you're not 100% sure, don't buy it.

I've owned 17 cars, many of them high performance vehicles. I've owned 1, count that................ONE automatic car, (which was when I was very young, and it was a sedan). Manual is the ONLY way to go (IMO) in a car like this.

you're right.. i am trying to justify the car to myself. but only because i never seem to find an FD in this COLOR, MILEAGE, and PRICE. I am just weighing the options man. Is the transmission more important than all those three? I just want some perspectives. Oh, and sorry for the two posts. I am anxious .

You registered 3 months ago. Give it time. Many, many people look for the perfect FD for them for 6 months to a year before finding the right one. Don't "settle" for an FD you'll be unhappy with down the road.

I had no trouble finding a bunch of low mileage RX-7s recently (and am about to buy a black 1993 R1 with 44k miles). Found six local ones with similar miles after restarting my search about a month ago. The price of three of them was loopy (> 20$k; cars will be on the market a long time - until the sellers figure out that NASDAQ is no longer at 4000 and the blue book is not a work of fiction), but three of them were in the ballpark of $16k. If you consider 70k low mileage, then the number of potential cars is significantly increased and you should easily get something for $12-$13k.

Given the $3-$5k cost of converting (and the huge hassle of finding all the right parts), I don't see how it could possibly make sense to buy an automatic if you want a manual.

Im being more active about it now b/c i just started my 2nd yr of med school and i wanna get a car before pathology really kicks my ****! The good thing about this one is.. that i don't have to travel to look at it.. it's 9 miles away from here in the swamp.

Then go buy it and stop wasting our time.

Sorry to be blunt, but you seem to be hell bent on buying this, even though it's NOT what you want. Which is ******* silly to me. So, go buy it and I look forward to your future posts of hating that you bought an automatic instead of a manual.

Good luck.

It seems to me, you're buying this car for looks alone. You should look for a different vehicle.

PDX RX-7: It isn't an R1. They did not come in automatic and they did not come in Silver Stone Metallic.

hmm

Considering it would cost more to convert it to 5speed, I found my FD TE for 12k even with 63k miles, 3k miles on the engine and the stock turbo's were just recently rebuilt, I personally hate automatic cars(cept in traffic), if your trying to justify yourself, that means your skeptical, so DONT buy it. I'd rather have a FD with 120k miles with a brand new motor than one with 70k miles with original engine. Search these forums for a week or so/check different resources, once you find the car, get a compression test, get the turbo's checked, then proceed to buy an FD. Just dont go "Super OCD Man" and buy something that isnt checked out by a renound RX7 store/shop. Thats my personal advice, I went through 8 FD's before I found the one I liked. Just take your time with it, its your money, and you want to get the best product you can with it.

Way to be a dickbag. I posted in here NUMEROUS times trying to help you, which you didn't listen to. With every post you made (in this and your other thread), you seemed to try and justify this Auto FD so you could buy it. I tried to steer you in the RIGHT direction, considering what you wanted, and you come back with a ******* response like this. Pretty shitty of you dude.

Oh one more thing that I like to factor in and that is resale. I know KBB usually adds for an auto tranny, but most buyers (I stress most not all ) wouldn't have hesitated if it were a 5 spd. Therefore most likely if you were to buy this thinking you were going to put $3500 into it, you wouldn't be AS willing to pay what they are asking for it. Not sure if this is making sense, it's early and I haven't finished my coffee yet. I say be patient (no pun pre-med ) and wait for the one YOU want!
