I think my rates are very reasonable too, but again, in my situation, I'm stuck w/ only Progressive (or Geico) as options until I'm 25. And these low-end insurance companies are cheap when it comes to payout for totaled vehicles, and don't offer many discounts that other higher-end insurance companies offer, such as for good credit (mine is excellent), good grades, driver improvement courses, anti-theft equipment, etc etc. The biggest discount I get from Progressive is a multi-car discount (which is about 20% per car, so it's pretty significant).

I've been using Allstate for atleast 10 years after Statefarm dropped me for reason I'd rather not divulge

Heh, Ramy I'm surprised you drove around in VA for more than a month on expired tags without a ticket. I got stopped the first time I left the driveway on expired tags. I took a gamble, needed to return some items to someone ASAP and the TR6 was the only car not on jackstands.

Thankfully my insurance was not affected.

Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. Here's the funny part. I was driving the FB around w/ expired tags for a month (and that's usually the grace period), b/c I simply didn't have the time to drop it off (it was gonna take a good bit of work to pass emissions). Then I started getting tickets in MARYLAND for the expired tags, although I had a safety inspection rejection sticker good for 14 days (they can't dyno the car until you pass safety, so VA cops won't ticket you w/ the safety rejection sticker). At that point, I was like ok I need to get this FB taken care of. So I drop it off, and I start driving the old '89 Camry Wagon w/ 215K miles we have (officially the FDNewbie Imports transport vehicle LOL cuz I can fit ALL SORTS of huge boxes in that thing haha), and I discovered about a week later that it had tags that were FOUR MONTHS OLD! LOL (I'm sure you know how it is w/ stuff around the house...if I don't do it, it won't get done lol). And go figure, I didn't get pulled over even though I was driving it across 3 diff state lines (DC, MD, and VA) DAILY, for 2 weeks LOL. It's funny how that works...

PS: And YES, I got a court date for the MD ticket, and you can bet that I'm gonna win it, even if I have to take it to Circuit Court

Your rates are decent compared to what?

Why for instance aren't your (and everyone's) rates half of what they are now?

Why is it ok for insurance companies to make obscene profits (definitions may vary).

Why are you required to have insurance? And then because many are required to - but don't - you are then required to pay for them by having uninsured motorist insurance?

My point is that insurance companies are not doing you any favors... They base their rates on whatever they think they can get away with first, and who deserves to pay more or less second, or third, or fourth...

Insurance companies are out to make as much money as they can ........... just like almost every company in any line of business. Shady practices can be found everywhere, not just in the insurance industry. That being said, Progressive Insurance is one of the worst offenders around. Believe me, I know!!!

At that point, if nothing's worked, and you're being stubborn and oblivious to the faster traffic behind you, I WILL pass you quickly, give you a dirty look as I pass, and cut back in front of you quite close, to show my disdain for your lack of road etiquette. That's definitely me. I have absolutely NO patience for uncourteous drivers. I periodically check my rearview for faster drivers and have no problem yielding to them. I EXPECT the same.

Moreover, another thing that PISSES me off is lane changes w/o turn signals, because it's VERY dangerous. While I'm good at anticipating what ppl are going to do, you can't read someone's mind. Turn signals can save a life (I use my turn signals even when I'm cutting off slow left lane drivers btw LOL). But what's even worse is when I let you in in front of me, and you don't raise your hand to signal "thank you." in return. It's common courtesy. Again, ppl have lost their respect for others when driving, and it really gets to me.

But other than that, I'm a very calm, cool, collected driver. Really.

PS: I don't mean you specifically when I say "you"
DUDE, i do EXACTLY the same!!! HAHAHHAHA no lies at ALL

ok well from my experiences in insurance, i work part time at an office, where we do insurance(farmers) and accounting, and yes insurance agencies don't care what they charge you, as long as they have your business. all the discounts applied are checked by the agent, they just check the box, and put out the order. (if you get life, health, house, auto all together with the same company i believe i was told the discount would be like 60%-50%, you also get a discount if you have a professional degree or family) we'll do anything for the client to come down to talk to us or buy the insurance, apply a discount or trim your plan/coverage to the bare minimum to make it sound cheap. cause all we do is collect commission for each client we bring to farmers.

that's one of the reasons i'm apprehensive about full coverage, i've sort of wanted to get into an accident in one of the beater cars we have to put it out of its misery, and just collect on insurance, can't sell it, not worth enough to fix it. haven't been able to yet -_-

FDnewbie for you i'd recommend trying to see if you can find someone that provides AssignedRisk, pretty much it sends out a request for insurance to like 50 smaller insurnace companies and finds the cheapest one. i'm not sure exactly how it works, but yea, look it up. thats what i was on when i first started driving, at 16 in cali it was 800 a year for liabilty on a regular car. it's going ot be 1300 for liabilty and 2800 for full coverage on the 7, not sure about the company but i believe it is farmers, i haven't checked on allstate yet, but i'm told they are cheaper
also shouldn't they give you a temp registration card, i have to smog my car as well, and since its not running its impossible, but they gave me this postcard thing to put on your window, to show that you're a temp till the end of that specified month

silentblu, thanks for the head's up. I'm prob gonna stick w/ Progressive for now though, given that I have a pretty good rate w/ them, and I've been w/ 'em for like 8 years. Once I turn 25 (in a few months) I'll prob go with State Farm... I'm weary about using small companies, b/c even simple things like getting someone on the phone at an odd hour of the night can be a daunting task w/ the smaller companies. I don't like that.

I will be the first to bust your ***** for being lazy ;oP, but that tag violation should not be a point able offense. If a defective equipment ticket or parking ticket is not point able, to my knowledge (ask me how I know), why in the hell are the taxing your license over something so petty. That is some of the most ridiculous shi* I've ever heard. A non-moving violation should be subjectively dealt with.

Where exactly does it stipulate that they can randomly assign points for administrative infractions, and what was their reasoning for doing so? I believe you, I just find it odd.

Take it to the top bud. I've saved my own *** in court enough times to know that the system is flexible if you can produce substantive evidence and objective logic.

I was driven off a two-lane road by an oncoming car (which drove away) and had a police report and witnesses to back it up. My entire family was dropped after 10 yrs with no accidents a couple weeks later.

I strongly recommend USAA to all of those who are eligible. They are well organized, communicate effectively, their rates are low and most importantly they are willing to work with you. They are still out to make a dime, so you have to strong arm them a little bit to work estimates in your favor, but all-in-all they have their act together.

I'm sorry about your car bud, and I hate to say it but without witnesses you don't have a chance. The truth of the matter is that 90% of the people lecturing you in this thread are probably guilty of the same bad habits (to varying extents), I included, but you are one of the ones who got caught. It is not just you that needs to learn from this, but everyone who thinks he/she can push the limits and beat the system when on a daily basis. If you've ever driven your FD on a brisk night, windows up, stereo on, just you and the road. Applying pressure to the throttle to feel your back get pulled into the seat, taking turns on the brink of breaking loose... We've all experienced the surreal feeling of being behind the wheel of these sports cars, but the reality of that scenario is that you are not the only car on the road, and if you do break traction or if a deer jumps out of the woods that could be your ***. It is stories like the topic of this thread and the black 20BFD and Burnout FD that just whacked into deer that remind me how easy it is to f* up your dream. Beyond that, it really should bring home the fact that life can be terminated in a heartbeat; all it takes is one little slip-up. I think all of us know or know of someone who has died in a car. I know several.

There are too many 400+rwhp cars going into the hands of people who do not fully grasp the responsibility which one assumes when he or she grabs the wheel. Does that mean that every young kid is not responsible to drive one of these cars? Not at all, but I do think that most aren't (not to mention the Veilside turbotron Type-j body kits which inevitably find their way onto these cars for $550 off Ebay). I know nothing about the guy who started this thread, I'm just laying my opinion out there about the current FD owner population in general.

I guess the one positive result of all of the new FD scrap metal out there is that these cars are becoming scarcer and are slowly retracting away from the 17yr old budget range.

It's obvious that you don't know how it works. Assigned risk rates are regulated by the state. Insurance companies are forced to insure a regulated number of drivers at rates that they have no control over. When you sign up for assigned risk, your name gets thrown into a "pool", and you are assigned to a random company. This company doesn't want you, but they are forced to take you. You can imagine what kind of poor service you will get in this situation.

The Assigned Risk program is only good for people who absolutely can't find insurance anywhere else, generally because of a really bad driving record.

***Edit: I insure my cars with Geico

i don't know much, but its not that you can't get insurance from anywhere else, i can, it is a pool of insurance companies but you pick the company, you pick the coverage, you pick the term, etc. i know that for a fact because i've used the program. they are not forced to take you, its just their standards for insuring people are lower.

i started driving at 16, i have one accident last year, its just assigned risk is cheaper for me, theres no point in getting something like farmers or state farm for a car that i don't give a crap about, i didn't have a problem dealing with them, they left me a message, and told me to call 24hrs a day about the accident i was in.

the other parties insurance agency also called me(mercury) and they close a certain time during the day. if any problems do come up you usually talk to your agent that sells you the insurance to begin with to deal with the problem. that's the way we do it at the insurance section of the office, and thats why we have so many customers.

You have a lot to learn. The first thing to learn is that you should make lots of inquiries when looking for insurance. Don't just buy what is available where you work. There are thousands of insurance agencies out there, offering many companies. The assigned risk plan is where they put you when they don't have anything better. Most agencies have something better, from a company that actually wants you.

^^ yeah. I know A girl who had progressive and oh my god...

Quick rundown:

1) this girl works for the bussiness office at a chrysler dealership. She drove a brand new special edition PT cruiser (loaded) that was on loan from the dealership. Had full coverage insurance through progressive.

2) Got into an accident and totalled the car. The adjustor give an extremely lowball offer of 14k. The adjustor provided the VIN models of the cars that he compared to estimate the value of her vehicle. She used her work resources and found out that these VIN #'s were actually the cheapest models of PT cruisers that is, the base model, no power windows nothing. Remember her car was loaded with upgraded everything (interior, wheels, sound system, paint). At the same time she resarched identical vehicles to hers (at least comparable).

3) She called progressive back and showed them what she had found out. Her agent was speechless and said that they would have to research this on their end as well.

4) Her agents manager called her back and accused her of being unethical because she was using company's resources to help herself. He also stated that he was not going to accept ths unless he spoke to her boss to see if she had approval to use the resources (seriously WTF? that has to do with anything).

5) She provided her boss's work and home phone number. Her boss is the owner of the dealership. Manager called the owner of the dealership AT HOME and tried to get her fired for using company's resources. The owner turned around and said "She can use whatever means are available to her. That is fine by me. I saw your estimate and what you did to achieve that price. You need to pay her what is fair. If you don't WE will see you in court"

6) They are in litigation right now. The owner (her boss) is financing the lawyer because she was soo pissed at progressive's tactics and how they treated her employee.

And I'm 100% w/ you re: driving requirements; in fact, I think the STANDARD driver's ed should include a CONSIDERABLE segment on advanced driving techniques. A Lexus that parallel parks? I find it perplexing that the govt. will put you in charge of a several ton vehicle that you can cause EXTENSIVE damage to (to both person and property), w/ such ****-poor minimum standards for driving ability.

There's a reason the Germans have no speed limit on the Autobahn but still have fewer accidents and fatalities than we do. They have rules of the road that are followed (such as YIELD TO FASTER TRAFFIC), and it takes almost $3,000 US to get your license, including a driving exam that MANDATORILY includes driving in incliment weather - not just rain, but also snow.

I could not agree with this more.... And I am also just like you when some retard is in the left lane and driving slow. but I am not really sure that I have as much patience as you. If I ride a lil close for a few seconds in their rear view...then I just pass them on the right asap. Then promptly cut them off.. Ppl in this country suck at driving for the most part. I couldnt tell you how many times I have almost been killed on the hwy b/c some retard didnt do a head check before changing lanes and almost runs me and my bike off the road and I have some DAMN LOUD pipes on my RC... (gotta love the vtwin racebikes).

I am also with progressive right now with all of my vehicles, I just turned 25 and they have pretty good rates. I will prolly switch sometime in the next couple of years, but not until I do the dreaded deed of selling my bike... And that starts me on carrying full coverage on vehicles. When you have to pay a crazy rate (for instance my bike is $3500+ for full coverage) it is NOT worth it... Those things are expensive b/c of all the expensive plastic (and OH GOD is it expensive) but in two years time of full coverage I could have purchased another whole bike. So it really just needs to be wieghed out. I DO carry it on the FD and my grand cherokee but there it is worth it... that is just my .02.

Sorry about the car. Glad you are ok. NO it is NOT repairable. It is totaled.... sorry. I have worked with body shop guys in the past and that car is done and will never drive correctly. Part it out and buy another FD.

Pretty soon there won't BE any more FDs to buy if people keep crashing them. If you don't drive like an ******* or a moron, your chances of not totalling your FD are pretty good. Rufio, this isn't directed at you, I am speaking in general based on what I've seen on this forum over the last year.

Since the car doesn't have collision coverage, there isn't going to be any "judgement" as to changing the title to salvaged or not. He still owns the car, and there is no reason for the title's status to be changed. The title should remain clear, which might be a reason for someone to try to fix it.

that car is sooooo far from impossible to fix.

Last I checked, you were talking about the FRAMERAIL not the STRUT TOWER. Yes, the strut tower is really bent and requires replacement. They'd possibly replace the rail on that side along with it. That's not an expensive or complicated procedure.

ANY competant exotic repair shop will tell you that they can fix that. If that car was 1-2 years old the insurance company would not even CONSIDER writing it off. Any bodyshop that wants to make money will both a: not use 100% new parts on an old car with expensive parts (and will tell you that) (used car = used parts) and b: Not turn down work.

When I purchased my FD it "looked" much worse than that but once I removed all the damaged crap I was surprised by how little damage there really was.. comments on this forum here included "that car will never drive straight again" and "body repair may be fine on a domestic piece of crap but not on an FD"... the FD has identical construction methods to every other car, and the car never didn't drive straight! I STILL haven't had it aligned and I don't need to, the car tracks totally straight.

There's pretty obviously quite extensive damage there but to say that car is irrepairable is just ignorant of facts. But hey, it's not my car... it just makes me sad when a 7 dies a needless death.

I guess that's my $0.02.

I am really sorry about your loss, but I want to thank you for making me realize that I NEEDED to upgrade my insurance policy. I just upgraded my insurance on both my cars. 42 dollars more a month for 500 deductable full coverage on both. Def worth it!!!

goodluck on your nightmare my friend. I hope everything works out for oyu in the end.

Yep. There are very few cars that can outbrake an FD. The FD is going to be able to stop quicker than the car in front of it 99% of the time.

I had a check within a couple days and didn't have to fight at all. They went to the shop to look at the car, questioned a few details and then immediately approved the full estimate for repairs. The total claim was about $5K. I stayed with them until recently and my rates never changed.

Now that I'm married and am insuring more than one car along with a house we got a better deal through State Farm.
