ABS wire?

Hello, I’m looking to utilize an ABS wire, specifically rear, for a wheel speed sensor. Where is the easiest spot to grab this from? I’ve deleted the ABS unit, but rear abs sensors and wiring are still installed. RHD model. Thanks for any help!

The abs sensor has a 1ft long pigtail and connector attached to it. You should be able to run a wire directly to it to get your speed input.

I know the front ones are about a foot long, so you know where at in the cabin the rear ones come in at? Don’t feel like tearing apart the interior if I don’t have to lol

The abs computer is on the left side of the trunk in the back corner. You have to remove the left side panel to get to it.

ahh ok. So im assuming the two rear sensors connect into the abs computer? I would just disconnect from that and then run a wire up to where I need it? If there’s a wiring diagram to show the routing of everything that’s all I would need lol I just couldn’t find one

Which means you have to loosen up the rear interior quarter panel to access to push type fasteners that hold the trunk side panels in place.

Pulling the rear int. q-panel has risks as the metal fasteners are held in place by plastic flanges that will snap off the panel (because old).

You have to gingerly reach in with a removal tool and carefully pry out the metal clips, which are often rusted in place,

from the body frame, If the ABS unit is removed, your ABS wires may be already cut/sliced as people are often not willing to try to fish out intact.

If you are RHD you likely have seats. The seat removal is not that hard, and likely you can do without removing the q-panels. Removes the seat back and then just pull the lower seat section forward, in a tipping motion, to release it from its large mounting points. What you seek may be under the seat as one of the rear interior harnesses crosses across.

Here is a view showing the LHS rear harness running back. There seems to be a cluster of connection points under the seat belt holder. The long cable running across cabin is the gas door/hatch release.

My friend had a fire start in the clump of connects. I wonder if it was from a cut-off ABS wire not properly wrapped.

The connector to the ABS module is a heavy unit. I suspect the ABS sensor connector connects to the rear harness and the circuit runs to the ECU and back through the heavy cable back to the ABS sensor.

This should be evident in the wiring diagram.

Ab3 Wire connects to the LHS rear (FR) harness at connector O-06.
ABS Wire connects to the LHS rear (FR) harness at connector O-06. That circuit does not seem to run through the ECU (afterall).
FR section wire connects to ABS Control Unit through the 0-01 connector.
FR section wire connects to ABS Control Unit through the 0-01 connector.

Unlikely in this case, V6 cars didn't have the ECU in the rear.

Of the cars logging wheel speed here ~ 20 years ago, they were intercepting near the ABS connector under the bins (or seats), stripping the shielding was a bit of a pain iirc.

I did not mean to imply that the ecu was in the rear. My guess was the circuit ran to the ecu in the front and back to the abs computer in the hatch.

But looking at the diagrams I posted above, it seems the wire from the sensor intersects the FR harness midway and runs direct to the ABS unit from there. The RHS abs wiring has a more circutous route.

So would I be able to pick up the signal from the sensor in the door sill, where the highlighted area is?

I don't think so. The connector from the sensor to the FR harness is at O-06. From there there is likely a short wire in the FR harness that runs back to O-o1 connector at the ABS computer. It seems however, that the wires from the RHS sensor run through the R harness and intersect with FR at connector X-23 which seems to be located in the rear of the hatch. See diagram in my post above. The question would be, :how accessible is connector X-23? To find the wire colour codes for your car, you need to find the wiring diagram for your version of FD. The wire colour codes may have changed significantly in late 1995 (version 4 cars).

It seems the X-23 connector is only a two wire. In my wiring manual (1993-7) the wires are "red/white" and "blue". The wires from the (RHS) sensor are the same colours. You may be able to intercept the wires from the RHS sensor in the R harness as it runs behind the hatch end panel (pull straight up without twisting); or simply at the x-23 connector.

Visited another shop today and had a look at another FD with its hatch plastics removed.

Connector in lower position is x-23 I believe

Here it is in relation to the ABS computer.

I could not spy where the wire comes through from the LHS sensor.

X-23 has a lot more wires than I anticipated. But it is the connectoir connecting the "R" harness and the "FR" harness.
Left top wire id
Left top wire is "red-white" Left bottom is "Blue". These are the wires coming from the RHS sensor. Your wire colours may differ, but location is likely the same.

That’s a great visual thanks a lot! Almost wondering if I could get to it by taking the speaker out? I’ll check tomorrow night, I haven’t been able to get it. Thanks again for all of the helpful information

If you are looking to pick up a signal from an ABS sensor, I would think accessing the RHS sensor wires at X-23 would be easier. Just remove the end plate of the hatch sidewalls.

Actually I found it right under the seats, but there’s two wires, any idea which one?
