ABS warning light

I just had my car in the shop for new springs and a downpipe install, when I picked it up and started driving away I noticed that the ABS warning light came on. It doesn't turn on until I start moving, and the fuses are all fine. Anybody have any ideas what the problem could be?

I'll be taking it back in asap but I'd like to get some idea of what might be going on first. Or fix it myself if its easy...

they may have broke the sensor on the wheel hub when they did the springs. pull the code and see where it leads you

I had no ideas the abs light gave you codes like the check engine light???

Sorry, i dont want to steal the thread...
Every time i've changed the pads or flushed the brake fluid i've had issues with the ABS lgiht staying on. In both occasions i had no abs unitl the light went away on its own. It took about a month each time but it eventually went back to normal.

Since the brakes werent touched i would lean towards mad_7tist's assesment and say they might have messed up a sensor. Or a loose connector somewhere. Take it back and let them know you have that issue, if the shop is reputable they will take care of that for ya..
good luck!!

I have the exact same problem. ABS light comes on when car starts to move. My ABS does not work, and it's been doing this for almost two years and it hasn't fixed itself yet.

As a test, the ABS computer waits for you to move -- if it sees that one wheel isn't sending a movement signal somewhat similar to the others, it knows something's up with the sensor aparatus/wiring... or that a wheel is rotationally bounded.

I'm definetly calling them tomorrow to ask them to fix it. On the same visit to the shop they also broke a stud on a downpipe install (understandable), and seem to have forgotten to re-install the under-body pan beneath the radiator (or whatever it is called). I paid the difference to pull the turbos and drill out the stud for the downpipe, but the abs sensor seems like a cut-and-dry 'its their fault' and they better still have the under-body piece.

BTW - I did try the abs tonight in the rain, and it is not working. I meant to check the wires as much as i can but ran out of daylight.

it is broke from the inside of the wire so you can't tell from the out side

I had that problem on my last car, and the workshop I took it to said it was just some dirt/dust in the sensor causing problems. They fixed it pretty much on the spot.

If it is not a sensor, most probable
Listen carefully when you firts move the car
You should hear a verty sligh "psss" noise comigng from the ABS (some sort of compression check) - literally in the 1st 10 meters
If not, you may have some BAS "hydrolics" going wrong

In case anybody find this thread in the future, the shop claimed that one of the sensors mysteriously went bad right after they did the suspension work. Possibly just moving everything around knocked the sensor enough to break it since it is 12 years old. They offered to split the cost of repairing it by giving me the labor for free, I just need to purchase the new sensor.

At most $150, I'm going to call Ray at Malloy Mazda to see if he has it cheaper.

just so you know, the "labor" is about 5 minutes. It's 1 bolt. Tell them to split the cost of the part with you and you will install yourself.
