Absolutely. Ever lift the same item in urethane and in fiberglass? There's a WORLD of difference b/w 'em when it comes to weight...

Depending on how much they are, I might pick up a 2nd set.

damper failure is primarily due to age/wear, and this can be accelerated by using a heavier spoiler than was intended for the damper.

So no difference in strut between the 98- and 99+ w/spoiler?

No mention of lift capacity on the strut?

do you mean between 98- and 00-?

I priced version VI (00-) dampers - didn't see the point in looking at anything older (though they are almost certainly the same).

There's no mention of lift capacity (unfortunately, the parts books and online database aren't that exciting, nor are parts guys generally informative) - however, there is a clear distinction on part numbers.

The U.S. parts book list the following p/n's

Rear spoiler (Hard Susp)

R/H strut 8BFA-62-620 $68.80
L/H strut 8BF6-63-620 $83.15

The non spoiler (Norm susp) p/n's

R/H strut 8BF9-62-620 $68.80
L/H strut 8BF5-63-620 $83.15

I purchased the hard susp struts for my car 3 years ago when I switched out my R1 wing for the 99 wing. I do have to lift it, but it holds it up fine.

My hatch with the R1 wing worked the same way. I had to lift it, but it would stay up on it's own.

I replaced both struts after I installed the 99 wing because it would creep down sometimes (I assume they are the original 10 year old struts). The new struts did the trick.

Now, if you want the hatch to open on it's own, remove the wing & stand back! That sucker will whip up & take your head off.

Interesting pricing - why would one side be more expensive than the other? They are identically priced for the version VI (and significantly cheaper - but freight could be a determining factor).

so it seems there are multiple strut options even within the 99 spec wing category? rear wiper and non rear wiper? seeing as i have a 99 spec wing and rear wiper ill be needing the strongest strut mazda makes for this application. its sad that others claim the hatch wont pop itself up even with the stronger strut. i HATE having to stick my finger in the gap between the hatch and the rear light bar and wedge it open like a freakin paint can!! its also embarassing to hit the trunk pop on my alarm with a bunch of things in my arms, only to have to put them down on the ground and pry my hatch open with the jaws of life.

Most every setup I've seen with these gas struts requires some effort to get it started "unless" the strut is in a position where it isn't even or past the pivot point. The heat on the hatch helps the hatch seal stick to the hatch and unless you grease the seal it's doubtful again that the strut will lift it on it's own. If your car indeed has a wing or a wiper they both provide for the necessary lifting point to get this thing started in the up direction, all you need to do is reposition the mounting point od the strut so that it's not in a poition that requires input from you.

I already PMed DaiOni w/ the info. We'll see if either he or I can help (or maybe both )

Hey Ramy, you think you could add this part to the ever-growing list of things I need from you ? My hatch also doesn't stay up and I never really knew what the issue was. Just figured they were wearing out. I also have a 99 spoiler. Let me know bro. Later.

Is there going to be a GB or anything for this? I'd like a set as my wing should be getting here in a couple of days.

DaiOni, this is common in the US. With virtually identical parts, the driver side is *always* more expensive than the passenger side. Goes for door handles, door panels, etc. Granted, the hatch struts are EXACTLY the same, so they should be EXACTLY the same price, but I guess they didn't think that far ahead, and priced based on trend

Riz, we should have a group buy up and running soon, so keep an eye out for that.

funny posts in this thread. i experience the same thing, the hatch only stays up if the car was left in the sun, or was it when it wasn't in the sun.. i don't remember which!

i'd like to pick up new struts tho that would hold up my 99spec wing as well.

Don’t miss out on getting struts that do as they are intended to instead of conking you in the head like an idiot.

You know to tell you the truth it never happened, but I have come close jerking out of the way just in time, or grabbing for the hatch.

Lets just say its time this issue gets resolved one way or the other.

Don’t miss out guys, this could potentially save a finger or two, and you cant place a value on body parts you need. (how’s that for a sales pitch)

WARNING based on a 2004 "Mazda RX7 93-95 Collosion Repair"publication p/n's should read, i.e. switching application of 8BFA and 8BF9 .. before ordering I would check with Mazda.
