Arrow 99 spoiler hatch struts solutions?

Hey guys I hate to admit it but I have put off finding a solution for rear struts that are suitable to hold the rear hatch up with reliable authority, for too long!

What are your solutions, and are there any domestic shops capable of supplying us with plug and play replacements?

Any part numbers or leads to help solve this annoying problem?
What is the correct weight to look for the 99 OEM wing?

I don’t wish to carry around a stick anymore if the temperature is not just right to keep the struts extended!

If I missed a thread somewhere detailing solutions or accessible 99+ parts for us non MMS guys, please redirect me.

Are the struts supposed to open the hatch on trunk release or just hold it open? Mine opens on release but only if its sat in the sun for a while, normal conditions it just holds the trunk open....

With the stock struts it pops itself open?

I don’t believe it should do this if they are the stock struts for the correct model?

I would find this very annoying as I often pop the hatch and wait a while before actually getting into it. I just don’t like the random failure to hold the hatch up reliably depending on the temperature of the day!

I'm happy to source you 99-spec anything. I'm in Japan, so it's just a matter of going down to the dealership.

I didn't know of any difference between early and later struts - but I do know they commonly fail over time.

That's not how they should work. They should hold the hatch up once opened. It's also strange that yours work better when hot. On a hot day I am the hatch support.

I've not priced them before, but I've added it to this week's list.

It works better on a hot day because the struts are filled with compressed gas. The warmer the gas, the higher the pressure.
I have the stock wing and got my struts from Advanced Auto online. Think I paid like $36. Works well, but the plastic cover that goes on the end of the stock struts doesn't fit the new struts.

If you have the length (just take a measurement) you can get what ever weight you want from McMaster Carr. I've found that even the Us wing can be enough for the gas struts to let the hatch drift down. Mine doesn't pop up when it's opened but if the windows are up it will lift about an inch when the door is closed, other wise i have to assist (break the seal of the weather stripping) with the rear wiper.

Haha yes, I didnt think it should do that either but I actually like it when it does. Its only on real hot days and like posted above its just because they are gas struts. I would rather it push the trunk up than just hold it up because a couple times I've popped it then forgot it, and had it FLY open at 60mph! Sounds like it would be easyest/cheapest to get some generic struts and fabricate something?

ya I would love to be able to get in on finding the correct parts.

I just don’t know which would be the correct amount of weight to order.

What are the stock ones rated at with and without spoiler?

DaiOni: if you think you could get some, and would be willing please shoot me a PM

rotarypower101, I'm not familiar w/ the pressure rating etc, but there are different hatch struts for with and without the 99spec spoiler. So I'd recommend simply ordering the OEM ones (new) for a hatch that has a 99spec spoiler, and call it a day

I already PMed DaiOni w/ the info. We'll see if either he or I can help (or maybe both )

Worse ...

Dear all,

I am new to this list (actually, new is misleading, I have not even taken delivery of my "Classic" '92 FD )

The car I am about to buy has the same strut problem, it actually doesn't raise up when released! And, I have to lift the '99 Spoiler (there's not even a narrow opening where I can put my fingers between to push it up), which I am very very uncomfortable with...

I appreciate if someone can provide the correct parts number, so all of us with the '99 Spoiler can get it over with! (I am sure there are a lof of us around)! Thanks!

Yes Ramy, GB would be a good thing. I want that spoiler later, so this sounds like a smart IDEA. There are tons of folks here with that spoiler.

yup that was me who ordered it from Ramy.

Different part number. I think he should have them soon so I can hook them up to see if it makes a difference.

FWIW, my struts will hold the hatch up, but won't push it up on its own.

My stock touring struts work perfectly with the VIS FG/CF 99 spec replica.

Is it significantly lighter thas the stock wing?

there are three types of damper in the mazda catalog:

1. no spoiler
2. spoiler
3. spoiler + rear wiper

damper failure is primarily due to age/wear, and this can be accelerated by using a heavier spoiler than was intended for the damper.
