Make sure you get the RZ models. I have them on now ... they're awesome. VERY quick spool-up and much better flow than the previous twins ... in fact too much, because I get boost spikes to 12 psi and boost creep up to 14-15 psi (downpipe/catback/stock ECU ... eek!). When I first ordered them, they sent the RB models which I believe the model # is NC3S-1. The RZ models have a different model # ... I'll go look when the weather clears up here.

The only diff is the RZ units have an Abraidable Ceramic coating to improve SEALING and EFFICENCY (actually allows 0 clearance between the Turbine/Compressor & housing) otherwise they BOTH use the same turbines/compressors & housings. the New ones are slightly smaller in Diameter (than 93-98 units) for lower rotational inertia (quicker spool up) but thicker w/ greater blade area & housing volume (higher flow).

If you're planning on running higher boost on the twins, I think the RZ's are the only way to go. Increased efficiency range which equates to more usuable boost (not superheated) that is 'reliable'. (Grain of salt required ... ) And the zero clearance from the abraidable seal keeps me comforted that the compressed flow is steady and uninterrupted.

I paid a little extra for mine. But, I did get them here and through customs in less than 10 days.

edit: Oh, and there is one other noticeable difference with the RZ turbos. There are extra reinforcement bolts on the compressor housings. They're copper-colored so they really stand out when you pull the turbos out of the box.

Max I agree with everything you said about the RZ turbos except that the abradable seals are made of plastic, not ceramic materials.

thanks for the info guys... I'm not sure what mine are doing or what state they are in...was thinking it was the usual IC coupling leaking boost, because I hear a whine and whoosh.. currently I have 0psi and smoke when I shift gears. Well the last time a drove it anyways.. Car idles fine and seems normal until I step on the gas. A little smoke is coming from the y-pipe, but not huge amounts and I have yet to see anything dripping out...I will be pulling off the intake tonight to see the front turbo and see if there is major shaft play or wasted blades...

what sucks is I drive my car like a girl (.8 bar) and it's a garage/weekend queen..and my turbos are NEW(not rebuilt)..well less then 10K miles on them.

I talked to retailer who has a set and says they are the 1999 Efini turbo and he does not know the difference of RS or RZ? How can I verify which turbos he has before I buy?

Thanks

The RZ ones will have a BLACK coating inside the compressor housings
otherwise they are the same and both are an upgrade vs the 93-98 units

When ordering them, make sure he orders the N3G1 model and not the N3C1 model. But, I'm not sure there is a difference between the RS and RZ turbos. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they're the same thing. It's the RB turbos that do not have the abraidable seals.

Thanks...this is good info

I'll need to verify if the twins I recently ordered from SR Motorsports ARE INDEED Japan spec '99s... I haven't verified the part number Stevil provided, but wil feel better if the part number on my turbos at least match what Stevil posted. The copper bolts and black housing will also help in distinguishing...

I'm expecting my '99s from SRM any day now...

Verified the '99 Jspec twins part number with "Tim" at Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development--N3G1-13-700 (no 1 at the end, as stevil posted).

I want some but I don't have the money for new ones so I'm gonna go with used ones from Jason @ JT-Imports.com. Hopefully they will do me fine. Hehe.

New '99 Japan Spec Twins Arrive from SRM Tonight

SR Motorsports took great care in packaging my twins--double boxed with peanuts between each box. The original Mazda box had the part number N3G1-13-700 stuck on the box. The only part number I could find on the turbos themselves was stamped on one of the Hitachi turbo housings, with the first four characters as "N3G1". I called Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development and "Scott" verified that the "N3G1" designates the Japan spec "280-hp" twin turbos...

So SR Motorsports was on the up and up...

Leslie was a pleasure to deal with on the phone (I bet she's a "hottie"). Greg was very straight-forward with no BS...

Good buying experience from my end...and the $2599 price for genuine '99 Type RS/RZ twins was suhweet too!

Current pricing on the Japan spec and US spec twins is $2899, which is still a heck of a deal. Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development charges $5 more for Japan Spec, and $2546 for US spec twins...

Just interested why you didn't go with an upgraded set like from BNR? I am trying to make the same decision right now and I have read so many threads on the topic I could scream!

vosko

That's quite right, vosko! As hard as I drive my FD on the track, only NEW twins will take the punishment of hard use.

Hmmm...maybe I'll get another 102,000 miles from the Japan spec twins eh??

I have an Anfini Y-pipe on order with Mazdaspeed Motorsports Develpment, so I'm doing the sequential turbos RIGHT this time

FWIW, I didn't "feel" any pill inside the wasteagate hoses...perhaps the J-specs don't come with a pill?

How does one control the boost with the J-specs and the Apexi FC commander? Do I need a stand alone boost controller to use with the Apexi PFC?? (sorry off-topic question).
