I attempted to do the conversion back in 2010 or so and being a stupid 19 year old I warped the outer lenses.
Hear me out before you flame me…. Does anyone know if these hideous knock off housing lenses could be removed and put on an OE housing?
It would appear the days of 99 spec housings being on ebay for $100-300 are long gone.
From the pictures i cant tell if they are similar or totally different.
The only difference with the 96+ taillights (They changed in 96, not 99) is the very inside part with the circles. The whole rest of the tail light is the same. If you have a set of 96+ circle tail lights with cracked or damaged outside, just get a set of 93-95 lights and swap the guts around.
I don't recommend the heat gun method, I prefer using an oven. More even heat and you can go slow that way.
All that said, don't mess with those cheese ball lights, even for parts. They are going to be cheaper plastic most likely.

Thanks Dale! I kind of figured that would be the response but never know!
My tail lights are 93 but I painted the circles on them at the same time I warped the lenses.
I found a passenger side light for pretty cheap on ebay and ill keep an eye out for the left one.
