It would require a substantial amount of work to retrofit the later system, and very little of the later system is documented in English.

Would it be cool? Yes. Would it cost a lot? Yes. Would it work on a left hand drive car? Who knows.

It's just not worth it, IMHO.

Dude, i think me and you are going to get along great. First you post that picture of the wicked belly pan and now your talking about late model abs. Any improvement in 60 to 0 times are great. The 3 channel system that comes on these cars leaves a little to be desired and i'm sure that it wouldnt be that hard to get installed. I have wired an entire car before so really something as simple as an abs system should not be hard. Do you know if the late model system has yaw rate sensors? Also do you have any way of sourcing such thing? It would be best to get the abs pump, any sensors that dont exist on our earily models, all hard lines and wiring. And to compare wheel speed sensors. Man that would be cool.

The '99 ABS system was just that, an ABS system, not a vehicle stability control system, so no, it doesn't have a yaw sensor.

"Little" being the key word here. Going from a 3-channel to 4-channel ABS is not going to make or break the FD's overall performance...

ABS was changed in december 98 and then again in september 2000. The second update was a bosch 16bit system and also included EBD (electronic brake distribution).

For comparison, here's a diagram of the 98-00 ABS system: http://13b.power.ne.jp/main_contents...ge_img/160.gif

not all 98- FDs have bigger brakes - and, in any case, bigger brakes were available from 95.

Electronic brake distribution is just a further advancement of ABS. Instead of just preventing lockup of the wheels, it also determines how much brake pressure to apply to each wheel based on comparisons between the rotational speed of each wheel. That's what the 16-bit processor is for.

Again, it would be cool, but I don't think you're getting the best bang for the buck trying to do something with that system. Not to mention brakes aren't something I care to do wild experimentation with - no worky brakes equals car hitting things. If I had an entire complete '99+ parts car in my backyard, MAYBE.

But, if you're willing to put your money out there and guinea pig the setup for everyone else, cool . There's tons of ideas that started out being goofy that are commonly accepted now. Unfortunately, you'll only be able to get a small bit of help from the forum - we simply don't know enough about the later brake systems.

I'm sure you can make the wiring work, and the speed sensors also. I'd expect you to run into problems with the ABS unit that sits in the engine bay: it might not be a direct bolt-in, coming from a RHD car. You might need to have some custom hard lines made. If you're looking for 99+ documentation, I think that Australia and New Zealand are going to be the place to find it, since they officially received the cars, and speak English also.

If you've got '99+ ABS parts lying around (and it sounds like you do), it might be nice to do. A better 4-channel ABS should make a nice difference under trail-braking conditions. However, tires are going to make the biggest difference in 60-0 times, as long as it's in a straight line.

the version 5 and 6 cars (98-02) were japan only (though are imported 2nd hand now) - so there is no official documentation in english.

and you'd be wanting late '00 spec, NOT '99.

remember people, there were 6 variations of the FD made - NOT TWO!

oh, and it's been done (the conversion) - I've seen an FD (a 91-93 version I) that came out of the fujita engineering workshop that had it done (as well as all the other good bits you would want from later spec). Pretty sure there was an article about how it was done as well, in one of the magazines (probably 'RX7 Magazine') - it's not something that interests me, so I never bothered to sit down and try to translate it.

do you have the magazine? and if so would it be possible to scan it? im VERY interested in the EBD... although a little skeptical that it would integrate seamlessly into our cars... but who knows. im sure all the parts are available (either from wreckers, or just from mazda japan directly (although that would be pricey) but ive been known to buy silly-priced imported FD parts before.
