8751 rpms!
Long story short, got insane wheelspin upon an ill-advised attempted burnout, and watched in horror as my tach shot past 8000. In 5 years of FD ownership, this has *never* happened to me. The peak on the PFC Commander showed 8751 rpm. It only happened for a split second, and of course there was minimal load on the motor. Even so, not a good experience......I almost had a heart attack .
As an aside, I seem to recall that TT Teddy saw something insane like 10,121 rpm and his motor lived to tell about it. My motor seems better than ever; I've been boosting the hell out of it the past few days---Looks like I built myself a strong one
Edit: Keep in mind that on monday I'm driving her out (with a friend following me in his FD) to Gotham in Fort Worth, TX.......not exactly right around the corner

Typically, rotaries don't care if they're overrevved for a short amount of time. That's one of the beauties of the rotary - you would have hand grenaded your VTEC in a Honda, though .
Past 8500 RPM, there's a lot of things that need to be built up in an engine to keep the harmonics from vibrating the engine apart. But, that's for *running* the engine in that territory - a quick foray in that direction with little/no load (like doing a burnout or misshifting) is not an issue.

A few years ago, my friend and I were about to replace an engine with bad apex seals on an FB. We decided to take it out to see what it would do. We went 75mph in second gear. Estimated the rpms to be around 10,500. It still wanted to keep going. Of course, the engine was barely running after we slowed down......

i still have a movie of a guy mis-shifting a RSX....14,000 RMPS and the whole thing just EXPLODED! They have pics of crankshaft parts, oilpan, etc like 50ft back from where they stopped! Not to mention the oil looked like a 10w30/metal slushy. haha. Gotta love the rotary for being able to take that abuse every once in a while!

Hmm... Euro spec FDs have redline start at 7000RPM. Also a slight beep is heard somewhere around there. What is a safe level we can rev our engines on the track ? I don't have any dyno results yet for my mods so I don't know if it even makes sense to run it past 7k on stock twins. (i think in US FDs have redline at 7.5k )
What do you think ?

I used to have a 1st gen with a street ported 13b and I reved it to 10,000 EVERY time I drove it. The cars engine had 121,000 miles when I pulled it out for a rebuild. The engine was still running perfect.
I have pulled my engine in my 3rd gen well over 9000 rpm a couple times...No big deal, you just don't make any power up there. I build a good motor so I am never worried.

what's the big deal rich??
why wouldn't you be able to rev it out to 9k?
I've always limited myself to 8500 and only on occasion, but other guys i've talked to tell me of reving the motor out to 9,500 on a regular basis....

8751 rpms? That's it?
Rich, in all seriousness...I have pushed all my engine's to 9.5...but on the average, just shift at 9000 rpms(haven't tuned the last two block of my PFC ...9500 and 10,000)
If your worried about hitting 8751 ONE time...think about this...I've tuned almost everyday for ONE MONTH...starting at 8 psi and will be finishing at 17 psi. Right now, I'm at 15 psi at 9000 rpms from 1st to 4th gear(run out of room for 5th)I did almost 10 runs at 14 psi/9000 rpms in ONE night!
Trust me...still idles at -400 vacuum(on the PFC) at 940 rpms...no problems whatsoever.

I can rev my motor to the sky and never have to worry about **** The efficiancy range of the ceramic seals is 6000rpm and up.
Edit: (didn't want to make another post )
Never heard anything about problems with the shaft and high engine speeds, feel free to enlighten me with any info you have on it...
