5th gear syncro replacement cost
Well #$*&* Missed third today, and went right to fifth! #$*(& Now the I get about 2 gear teeth worth of grinding when I get into 5th from 4th. It will go away if I double clutch of course. But I was wondering if any one here had a ball park of the cost to get the 5th gear syncro replaced.
TIA...

My 5th was grinding also. Turns out when the tranny was opened I also needed the actual 5th gear and the slider. Ordered the parts from Ray under $270 and labor was another $600. Seems cheap at like $20 for synchro only when the whole job can end up costing you just under a grand.

That's a good deal. Here it's $1300CAD just to R&R a clutch (no messing with the tranny). Shop rates are around 90-100 CAD

So if the tranny is out, about how long does it take to R&R it, again if it is already out and ready to be worked on? Just curious as I have just a slightly notchy 2nd gear at low rmps and want to address it before it goes back in.

The most laborious part is taking the tranny out. If you bring the tranny to the shop, it'll be easy, quicker, and cheaper, however, if you bring the car to the shop to drop the tranny $800 is the going rate around the SF Bay Area.

1) Replacing 5th synchro with the tranny out of the car is a couple hundred bucks.
2a) Install the updated select spindle ($70) to stiffen the spring on 5/R and help avoid missing 3rd. 2b) Don't screw up shifting.
3) Rebuilding a tranny is a variable cost. It depends on how strict the rebuilder is about accepting the hard parts. Changing bearings and seals is not enough in many cases. With the current price of $600-700 for a low mileage JDM tranny, spending $2000 to fully rebuild a tranny can be hard to justify.

The the syncro could break for good, get stuck in the other gears, damaging them, even getting jammed in the other gears, causing the car to come to a screeching stop.
