5th gear synchro
I want to fix my 5th gear synchro as it grinds once in a while, and i might as well do it before I put the engine back together. I have the piece already. But i was considering just taking the tranny to a shop as I don't have the required pullers.
Trans-Tech a local tranny shop quoted $425 which is insane since i would bring them just the tranny and the parts. I couldnt believe it. Has anyone else taken the tranny to a shop with the parts, to get the synchro fixed? what did it cost you? The DIY makes it seem like an hours worth of labor if you've done it before.

Seems a little high for my area, but it's probably pretty close for east coast mechanic hourly charges. Full rebuilds are usually around the $1300-1500 range. Shop around and get some other estimates.

Ok, thanks, I was just expecting like an hour or two of labor charge. which I was estimating at about $75/hr i just don't know how they could get to 425. I'll attempt it myself if i cant get under $200. Any recommendations on what to do if i dont have that really long puller shown in the DIY?

I made my puller for about $40. The extensions came from steel stock I bought at the hardware store, drilled with an electric drill and all-purpose drill bit. No welding required. If you really want to borrow mine (with a deposit that gets refunded) PM me.
You'll also want a socket for removing the countershaft nut. I think that was $10 at the local hardware store. Some kind of impact wrench is best for that guy.

Well I've got it all the way apart everyone, thanks for all the info. But it looks like my synchro isn't damaged, take a look at the pics. Also, i made my own puller, the pic that you see was using exhaust strapping that i had around, it broke. haha but then i went to lows and got something that looked just the same but was thicker and cut it down to size, it already had the holes through it so it worked perfect. Does anyone have the torque specs on the housing bolts and the gear? My tranny was definitely grinding when going to fifth, what could it be?

how are the ridges on the inner/cone surface of the old syncro? compare it with the new one, it is the ridges on the inner surface of the syncro that catches the gears and match the speed of your shift hub during a shift.
