Very nice parts list! I will have to save it! But holy crap....what the hell do I need to order if I can't shift into 3rd at high RPM's? I want to do it right but if the syncros are going to be over $100, I would be better off ordering this J-spec tranny instead.

It may be a good situation to buy the Jspec tranny.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to *know* the jspec is good, just like any other used part. But I haven't heard anything bad about them, and many have gone that route with excellent success. You also get the lower 5th gear, updated select spindle and 5th synchro too.

Yea....the lower 5th gear interest me but I already have 430 gears so my 5th gear pulls much harder than before.....It will be interesting to see what the J-spec tranny with the 430 gears is like. I'm a big drag racer and if I could finish the 1/4 mile at the top of 4th would be sick.

By the way....your write up on rebuilding a transmission is killer....Thank you for taking the time to write it up. After seeing that....I'm wondering how a transmission shop locally would charge only $200 to replace a 3rd gear syncro.

If you hand them the tranny, maybe. But you have to nearly completely disassemble it to get to 3rd synchro.

Yea.....I do have to pull it myself. How much would someone charge to do everything you did in the write up? (all syncros, forks, sleeve, ect)

Anything else I should do while I have the tranny out?
I did the whole berring kit and all the sycros when i took mine out. I ordered a rebuild kit from Jim Crow with everything for 515$.

Redline MT-90, or Amsoil MTG. These are GL-4 sythetics, which arguably work best with the synchronizers for smooth shifting.

While the GL-5 and GL-4/GL-5 rated oils are very good for protecting the gears, the extremely low friction can overwork the synchros and provides very little benefit.

In the differential though it's a different story. GL-5 all the way.

Ok, so say you have access to a full shop ( hydraulic lifts(Drive on or 4-point), full range of tools, Impact wrench's, engine/transmission stands, exhaust ducts, you name it, they got it). How long would you estimate this job to take from start to finish (assuming you organized properly before hand)??

I'm asking because I am thinking I will need to get this done soonish.. (only way to shift into 5th w/o grinding is to rev match.) Curious as to how much time I should expect to set aside for the project...

140k, and if I shift slow, no grinding. These trannies actually like it better if you hesitate for that split second when you pass through the neutral range.

With help, first time.....maybe 1.5 hours to remove the transmission. If you're familiar with the insides, have a bearing puller with a long enough extention....maybe another 1.5 hours (another member helped me with mine and he was pretty quick despite my help), and 2 to 3 hours to re-install. Just a guess, but maybe 6 to 8 hours total depending on skill, experience and how developed your four-letter vocabulary is.

I am supposed to have a new transmission in the R1 I just picked up. I get no grinds with 5th driving normally , except if I high rev in 3rd and then bypass 4th going directly into 5th then it grinds 50% of the time , is this a bad syncro?

It is too late for your but apparently on 93's there was an issue about a weak spring/piston (around the bottom of the shifter) at that alone was the reason for lots of 5th gear synch. going bad. I read this information back when I was changing the cluch in the tranny so I decided to buy this spring/piston for like $50.00 and as of today it shifts great. I believe this is a must for those of you with 1993 trannys... cheap insurance.

As far as missing gears while shifting - there are no upgrades on this although I have read a short shift will help getting get into 3rd.

I think your referring to the "shift select spindle" and Mazda changed to a slightly heavier spring rate. It helped but.....I don't think that was the lone reason for the synchro failure.

I agree with you... it helped. Although if I had not done this mod then I too could have a bad 5th gear sych. Or I could of saved $50.00

That's usually operator error. If you rev high in 3rd and decide to go directly to 5th, take your time putting it in gear. (Because if you had reason to hurry you'd be going to 4th anyway).

145,000 on my transmission and the 5th gear synchro just got notchy a few weeks ago.

The input shaft bearing is beginning to sound like a rock crusher at times though. I plan to rebuild my spare tranny soon and swap it in.
