5th gear synchro
at what mileage did you all have to replace your 5th gear synchro? my tranny has 47k and i already need to get it replaced... is this normal?

For a '93 Yes, for a '94 + no....
My synchro didn't start to go untill about 85k
108k, still going strong so far :)

55k needs to be replaced bad...just need the time and partz...

I took mine out @50k missing a shift merging onto the freeway to catch an STI, I don't think the age matters, it's a driver error issue, plus weak syncro's and shift detent spring.
My 95 grinds in unless youre really careful at 100,000miles. I learned how to drive stick on this car when I bought it with about 50,000miles.
Where can you purchase this synchro? I'm actually in need of a replacement as well.

76k miles and no grinding at all. '94

93 Touring with 58,000. So far no problems. Just hope I didn't jinx myself.
Bought my car with 52k and it was already bad.
I remember mine going out the first month I had the car...whew, what a bad day it was. Haha.
93 with70k here with no problems.
Make sure you get the spindel too when ordering the new sync. Do a search and you will find the new updated part #'s
remember to replace the rear seal while you have the tranny out! i've heard its recommended to do that everytime you do your clutch... and think about it if you run low on fluid from it leaking out that seal your syncros are gonna die really quick dry.
i've got a 93' r1 mine is shot too:'(

1993 touring. Mine went out at 46000 miles. Was fine until I let my friend drive it and he went all mr. nascar on me. In fairness to him the clutch was getting low and not friendly to speed shifting.
I got the upgraded spindle and had all the synchros replaced for good measure. Also had the clutch replaced at same time. |
How much should the syncros cost? A local Mazda dealership told me the 3rd/4th gear syncro is $200! I thought they were $30 - $40 each and I was going to replace all of them while I was in there. Does this sound correct.
Anything else I should do while I have the tranny out? |
missing your third gear shift greatly accelerates loosing the syncro
My '94 has 88k and badly needs this done, but i have to fix some other things first.
2nd and 3rd gear synchros are double-cone synchros, so that makes them more expensive. But I think they are around $70/ea, and the other synchros are around $30/ea. Unfortunately, new synchros won't cure all shifting problems - in many cases the actual engaging gear dog teeth get rounded and worn and that's a much more expensive fix.
I suggest you find another place to buy your parts. Malloy has good prices and Ray knows these parts like the back of his hand (it's scary, in fact). For pricing estimates, I also use www.worldpartsexpress.com and look up things by part number. You can get part numbers from the downloadable parts diagrams. As for breaking the synchro, the updated synchro can still be broken. Last friday at a HPDE my instructor missed 3rd a couple of times, but fortunately he was composed enough that rather than smashing between 3rd and 5th, he ended up just in 5th. If you smash at 3rd and miss it, you'll break that 5th synchro. Dave |
Bought my 93 with 46k miles and 5th was already shot. I'm currently working up the courage to do it myself.
Anyone know of a website that you can buy the syncros? I tried to use the www.worldpartsexpress.com but couldn't find the part where you can look up part numbers.
