5th gear synchro
I was just thinking the other day, after reading here every so often about the synchro, how lucky I was to not have that problem....................we'll, its here. I have a minor grinding going into fifth. If i wait a couple of seconds before releasing the clutch, its fine. How bad does it have to get before I need to fix it?

i dont mine when i replaced my clutch, its actully not that hard of a job, it was the first time i broke a tranny apart, once you get to bearing i recommend that u bring it to a shop to get it pulled other than that straight forward. U have to **** up bad no to no how to put it back together.

The longer you grind it the more metal is going to float in your tranny. Mine was like that for about 1k miles and I replaced all my tranny bearings due to the metal scoring in the bearings. That added about 500 to the cost of the r&r.

Contact Ray @ Malloy Mazda (888)533-3400 I got my upgraded/improved synchro and spindle for only $56!!! Also, here is an easy how-to guide, I'm actually ripping the tranny apart to do it tomorrow:

I also heard from many first-hand users of that link that said the job was really easy with the help of that link. The how-to maker is unknown.

Yeah, I would recomend getting cracked or broken synchro's fixed ASAP, because I think my tranny is screwed. It grinds in 5th badly but also seems like it has a load on it when pushing it in neutral. So I think I'm gonna need a tranny rebuild.

And BTW, no, Mahjik did not make those instructions...He just came across them one day (a while ago) and he doesn't remember/couldn't find who it originated from, so he's just hosting it on his web site.

Do the replacement ASAP!!! ANY loose things (syncro parts) could lodge between gears and any time and take out the whole tranny case.
Be sure to also replace the weak *** pall on the shifter housing that caused the problem in the first place. the factory replaced the original with a beefed up unit to add more resistance to the shifter trying to jump the gate on a fast shift from second to third..

yea if you blip the throttle it won't grind, but if you just replace a $60 synchro you don't have to worry at all. i guess doing the synchro is harder for some people than other, but i am definitely gonna replace mine.
