5th gear synchro
5th gear synchro
I have a 93 FD Touring with low mileage and numbers matching all original parts. Unfortunately my 5th gear synchro is broken. I have access to a lift and can perform the fix my self. The problem I am having is locating a 5th gear synchro for a USDM spec transmission. I would rather not switch to a JDM 5th or go aftermarket as I want to keep it OEM if possible to keep the value of the car. A rebuild kit would be nice but the ones I found have bearings that I don't need making it $$$ I just need gaskets and 5th as the rest of the gears and transmission are fine. Links to websites would be great or a point in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks for the help!

A bearing has to be removed to access the synchro so you will replace it along with the nut. Very often when replacing parts its not always the ONE part that needs replaced. There are other things that has to be removed or disturbed to access it and subsequently replaced through the course of the job. So yes, you actually do need more than just the synchro

I found this rebuild kit that seems to have everything and a lot more I don't. Just a little confused on why they have 2 different kits I thought that the FD used the same transmission from 93-95 but I am not an expert on FD by any means. this seems to be my best bet to make sure I get everything I need for the rebuild. Has anyone used this kit before if so was it a good it?

The 87-93 kit is not for FD. That's a mistake on their part. Yes, that's an entire kit but you don't need to buy any "kits". Just buy what you need or let the shop handle it as you should be. It's not your responsibility to provide the parts for a job you want done. Let THEM do that.
I have access to a lift and I am doing the work my self, that why I am ordering the parts. Trying to keep it to to just the parts I need. Such as Pennzoil Synchromesh, 5th gear synchro and bearing, gaskets, shift linkage bushings (also broke), Mostly trying to get part numbers and more a good website to order it from.
Best bet for correct parts is Ray Crow

Along with the strengthened synchro, part of MAZDA’S fix was a shift-select spindle with a stiffer spring, supposedly to help prevent accidental shifts to 5th when you wanted third. Pretty certain Ray will have those and I doubt it costs much. Two 10mm bolts and Bob’s your uncle.
I’d also recommend replacing the rear transmission seal (R501-17-335A). Last I checked it only cost a bit over $20. R & R’ing the drive shaft can SOMETIMES cause them to start leaking and since they’re cheap and take all of 5 minutes to replace it just makes sense…imo.
And grease that lower shifter bushing and pivot ball before immersion in the gear oil per the FSM.

In the email I sent him, I asked for both front and rear seals, pan gasket, the bearing on the shaft for 5th gear, and any other recommendations he has. Just awaiting his reply. I will grease it up thanks for the info
Not sure on your skills but this might be worth a look….
THIS IS NOT MY WRITE UP. I simply saved this for other people so DON'T contact me about the tools

I glanced through it, I must say that is a great write-up and will be extremely helpful. I was an ASE certified tech some time ago. One of my certifications was manual transmission. My base back home (on a deployment) has a shop to work on cars with a lot of tools. Come hell or high EGTs I will get it done. It's just been about get the right parts for the job. Thanks for the link that's super helpful
Good thread here too: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...ispreloading=1
I reached out to Ray Crowe via email and he sent me a list of parts I would need. When it came time to discuss payment I suggested multiple ways of doing so (venmo, zelle, paypal). He claims "Not set up. Any card". I am not about to send anyone my card info via email. I am not saying this to slander him or to discredit his name, but that's odd. So any websites or shops recommendations with a credible way of payment methods would be appreciated.

If a mazda dealership sells the parts that is fine with me. I didn't think they would have the parts any more since it's such an old car. I am glade that there is someone out there that helps ppl in this community and I hope he continues to do so. I just didn't feel comfortable with it. Thanks for the help
And as many have already mentioned, Ray Crowe is absolutely the best person to source oem Mazda parts for reasonable prices. He used to be the Parts Manager at Malloy Mazda and won several service and sales awards through the years. He still has connections in the industry and works with Mazda parts department to sell the parts. He's completely trustworthy.
If you're not comfortable emailing your credit card number, you can get Ray's phone number and tell it to him via phone. Search his name, he has been a reliable source to find and buy new Mazda parts for decades. We are lucky that Mazda offers quite a few replacement parts for these cars, given their age and low sales volume in the first place.
