5th gear grinding, but rev. is fine?

Hello all.
I have had my 93 FD for a little bit now, and when I drive it, i notice 5th grinds a little. When I slide it in slowly, or the rev's drop down to about 2k, it goes in fine. Is the trans going out? Do I need a rebuild? Thanks for all the help.

P.S. I just changed the Trans fluid and drove around for 15 mins, and it still grinds.

The infamous 5th gear synchro. They all break.

The breaking is caused by the 2-3 shift under high revs. The drive train moves a bit from the torque while shifting causing you to miss 3rd and hit between 3rd and 5th.

It's a very common problem, but I believe the synchro can be replaced without having to get a full tranny rebuild.

I replace the 5 th gear ring and clean the tranny for $ 75 to $100 if you bring me the tranny .The Garfinkle engine torque brace will help to not let it happen a second time after the repair . Look for info on it .A group is going on now .

I broke mine by going straight to 5th gear from 3rd without shifting to 4th first... sigh...

If you're going to replace it, make sure you pick up the new synchro. It's supposedly stronger than the one that came on 93-95s. I have one sitting at home in the bag. I'll post the part # when i get home this weekend. Also, +1 for the torque brace.

It'll last forever if you don't crush it.
