5000rpm Backfire

My car doesn't seem to backfire until it hits about 5000rpms.

Once it gets around that area, all you hear is numerous small pops around the exhaust.

I am just afraid it might do some damage.

Any suggestions?

Check my sig for mods.

This is common for our cars. It will do no harm, just think of it as the sound that horsepower makes.

It hasn't done it before. Plus although I really enjoy the speed of the car, it seems like im not making any power towards 160 because of the backfiring.

Is the car actually backfiring while accelerating?

Who tuned the PFC?

Well the PFC wasn't tuned.
And yes 160 MPH. Don't worry, I aint no stupid street racer risking lives.

Road was completely, and I mean completely empty.

Anyway, the thing is, I hit around that area before and I have never had it backfire like that during WOT around 5000RPMS.

I just stopped driving it for now cause I don't wanna **** up the car.

Plus the knock reading im getting is constantly in the 70's which is also getting me worried.

Engine is actually pretty new so I don't think I have to worry about it dying on me. Its still pulling hard and the vaccum is in the 17-19 range.

Also, the wondering Mahjik. Do you have any suggestions why my primary turbo won't work right? I get about 5-7-11 pattern which honestly is annoying me at this point.

I figured a boost controller might fix that problem, but I don't want to spend $300 on the greddy and find out its not that. =(.

It's possible that since the PFC isn't tuned, you are just fouling your plugs early. Are you running the standard base map or someone else's map?

Either way, get it tuned or you do run the risk of tearing up your engine. Buying the PFC and running the base map is NOT the same thing as buying a reprogrammed ECU like M2/Pettit or any of the others.

From what I've read, the knock reading on the PFC is mostly pointless. Once you get the PFC tuned, then it will be a little more useful as you'll have a baseline number for your car to judge if it's going up or not.

I can't see a boost controller fixing that problem. I would start with some basic troubleshooting before spending some money. A boost controller is always something good to have but I would try to fix the problem first. You might start getting familiar with this site:

When did you start having boost problems? Was it after adding something to the car or working on a problem?

I guess I should rip up the car again and see if there is indeed a leak.

Sounds like ignition breakup if it's happening at WOT. Like they said, get new plugs and get it tuned.

Backfiring on decel is different, and that's ok.

I've heard the knock sensor is also useless, but do notice a difference.

Got the car tuned a couple days ago, and put a shitload of octane booster in. Even boosting to 1.31! bar (19 psi?) my max knock reading was 14.

Couple days later after the tank was completley emptied and put 93 octane in with no booster running at 17 psi I'm getting max knocks of between 40 and 60.

how much do you think they would charge to get it tuned?

Also, how much do places usually charge to get the primary working in perfect condition.

dude - just take the car over the Joe's. Whatever the cost is it will be cheaper than replacing the motor if the tuning is off and you'll not have to worry about **** like getting the primary turbo working.

where did you do the 160 run? ocean pkwy?

Oh yeah. =)

Anywho, I was planning on taking it to KDR this weekend unless you really recommend joe's alberto.

Visited there before and saw his white FD. Looks really nice. =)

Anywho, I mean if they can deliver, I will go. I am just more worried about the theft involved. =).

joe rebuilt my motor and setup my power fc. car runs incredibly well. no backfiring, no hesitation, no rough spots, quick spool up, easy start, smooth run, good idle. i've never had it so good with a tuner and i've been modding cars since 88 and getting screwed often along the way by supposedly good tuners...

plus he is close by so if you ever have any other problems you can get them addressed pretty quickly rather than killing at least one day out there and parting with your car for god knows how long.

its all up to you though and whatever makes you feel good.

btw - the white single turbo fd belongs to Roan not Joe. Roan is the big guy with the goatie.

oh. =P

Wanna come with me. =)
Maybe they will give me a discount if we know each other. =)

Plus we an check each others car out. =)

To bad I can't go this week.

Running a business myself, some jerk screwed me over with fake credit cards when ordering for my services. Being stupid and lazy that I am, I didn't double check and now I'm broke.

The FD had nothing to do with it. =P.

Anyway, I might be able to get some cash flowing by this satuday, but I gotta see.

If you do wanna just chill though, get back to me.

I am planning on going true non-seq.

Hopefully Joe can do this for me at a nice price and hopefully it will rid me of all these turbo problems.
