Did a lot of researching and couldn't find one but SR Motorsports. Called them today and the guy I talked to said he doesn't remember it having a CARB E.O. number. As a smog tech, I know for a fact that you need one for an aftermarket cat. So wondering if anyone has bought one or know of any 50 state legal cat before I fork over $1800 for the Mazda cat?

FWIW...when searching for approved cats on CARB's database, I found it only goes back to 95 and doesn't list the RX7 as a model under MAZDA.

Glad I don't have to deal with that nonsense. Even more off-topic...maybe SR Motorsports mis-placed the E. O. number with the tags on their Mazdaspeed PPF's?

 

nah, I can't risk getting one with high miles that have taken abuse from leaking oil or coolant. happened to me before. I'll be buying a new one and 1 time only.

You might call Rotary Performance and see if the Bönez cat is CARB legal. I thought they were, but they may or may not be:

^I couldn't find an E.O. number associated with the Bonez. I found a related thread here...but he couldnt find one either.
OP...again....I don't have emiissions, but couldn't you pick up a used OEM cat for testing/inspection and then stick a nice Bonez hi-flow on there in between?

 

AFAIK, none but the stock catalytic converter is CARB legal
Though, you may pass the sniffer and conceivably slip by on visual with an aftermarket replacement.
Not sure how Fresno behaves.

Other vehicles have CARB approved aftermarket parts(ie civic). The rx7 likely never had the market volume to warrant such expensive certification processes.

 

OP's point is that an OEM cat could be burnt up, poisoned, rusted out, etc. If you can find one off a low mileage vehicle that's had few mods it should be fine.

If having "official approved" cats isn't a big deal (lax visual inspection), any good condition aftermarket one will work as long as the smog pump and ACV are functioning.

 

I would start buying used oem cats until I found a good one. You can likely buy 8-10 used ones and still not spend $1800.

 

Forget it. They will want both a stamped CARB # on the cat' (old law) and a sticker on the hood (new law) and that won't happen. There were some changes back in '09 (I think). I bought some CARB legal cat's for my truck and had to get them installed before jan of the following year (08 or 09) as after that, not onlt does it have to be CARB but it has to match exactly to the engine and not just the manufacturer. So V6, V10, fed v8's and even some CA v8's. Muffler shops won't install it if it's not in their book matching to your engine. I was failed one year (with truck) for not having the hood sticker even though the CARB # was stamped on the headers. They even asked for the sticker for the K&N filter.

Tri-point has a cat that looks OEM and will pass CA sniffer.

 

CA has visual inspection. That is the main issue. They can and will fail you for polished oem parts or colored hoses.

Sunshine and low crime rate in trade for (3rd lowest) personal freedoms.

Haha I suppose but you guys act like CA is the only state that has warm weather. Not trying to get in a pissing contest, but I just dont see how you can be a car enthusiast (that likes to build stuff), and live in CA. Seems impossible.

I race rally cars has to be legally registered and insured. I have a full cage and car thats converted to AWD and have no problems deal with inspection/emissions. Just simple does it meet the emissions requirements and is it safe.


FYI, I love driving in the snow Best weather to race in.

 

dude it's a joke . Even still I'd rather take a nice mountain cruise in january and worry about smog in two years than to sit in my *** with my car stored for months at a time because it's too damn cold to go outside.

 

Yeah, i know haha. Thats why i'm selling my rx7 soon. Street driving is boring after starting rally and dont really drive it much anymore.
