4wd Rx7?
Is it possible to convert a 1993 RX7 to 4WD? Cost isn't really too much of an issue, and don't tell me to go get an Evo, Impreza , Mazda Familia etc.
Thanks, Dan.

Its not so much for respect, bling, cool factor. More for improving the drivability over winter, its just an idea at the moment as I have heard Rx7's are somewhat temperamental in the rain/snow, i have yet to drive mine in either yet , it might be fine....we shall see. Also anyone recommend me some wheels, i dont like the stock ones all that much.

We don't really get snow here anyway, and i don't NEED to drive it, ever as i live over the road from my work. So decent tyres on all four corners and sensible driving and it'll be good as gold in the rain?

Obvisously you can't run some super dry sticky tire in the rain, you just need to use a little common sense.

when it snowed out here i couldnt even get out of my parking space. i shouldntve been trying to drive it anyway, but i figured the roads were mostly clear and salted so id make it to work. these cars dont do snow.
as for rain, be careful with the throttle and you'll be cool. no need for a 4wd IMO, just drop a few hundred for some little honda.

I managed last winter just fine with my FD. No need for 4WD I had 225/50/16-wintertyres(studless) and I didn't have any close situations, crashing etc.

I completely agree with the winter beater. My theory is that car companies make these types of vehicles, in part, to boost sales of their commuter, beater cars. Old honda, old escort, old mitsu, old scooby, old anything with a 4 banger (mid '90's) will do well with snow. Just dont' tempt taking your FD out in the snow. Repairs are expensive!
Oh, and like was said earlier, anything is possible with money, but this would be extremely difficult. Have you ever taken a look at the area between your front wheels? Where are you going to put a front differential, drive shaft, transfer case, etc.?

The logistics of such a conversion are pretty mind boggling. Think about it, you'll need to setup the engine to work with an awd transmission. Not exactly a lot of wiggle room in the engine bay but anything's possible if you sacrifice enough. Now you've got the added weight and drivetrain losses of the AWD system, assuming you got it all to fit (mounted the motor longitudinally and used a transfer case-type transmission or moved the whole lump forward 2 feet and used a Subaru type tranny). On top of sacrificing all your accessories, modibility and heck probably even cooling effeciency moving everything around under the bonnet, now you're adding on extra weight and upset the balance of the chassis. Okay anything can be done if you put enough time and money into it, but why? It's like saying I want to setup this yank tank for track duty. The rx7 is about as far away from the "utility" end of the spectrum as you can possibly get. It'd be far less costly just to start with something more adequate for your needs.

Im 17...the insurance company want 1000 pounds for a 200 pound car.
If i can't get on with it in the rain, then it will be sold and i will probably be in pursuit of something a little less powerful, and a little less rear wheel drive.

Because i think insuring a second car, for that much money is just like throwing it away.....Atleast with the 4wd conversion i would be left with something at the end.

You're wasting everyone's time with this thread. You aren't going to do a 4wd conversion. It's not quite as easy as swapping out your diff. Either get a beater, or sell your rx7. done.
