3rd gen Fuel Pump Install

I plan to be installing a Rotary Performance Fuel Pump into my 93 in the next 2-3 days. The guy at RP said it was a simple 30 minute job, but the box never came with any instructions. Anyone have a link to how to go about doing this and the steps required? How about anyone who has done this and any advice they can offer? Thanks much!

It's pretty straight forward. Take out the bose (1 connector for it on the left side). take out the 4 screws over the plate, pull it up slightly, disconnect the ground spade connector, and the white plug. then move the plate to the side. looking at the top, I took the hose off on the right, then the 2 fuel lines. They'll stay in place but if you want mark them and the corresponding hard line. I had less than 1/8 of a tank so I didn't worry about de-pressurizing the fuel line, just had a little dibble out, no spewing. take out all the screws to the pump plate, about 8. slowly lift it up and tilt it out. From here its pretty simple, couple of screws, change the sock over to the new one and make sure the new pump fits in the rubber sleeze tightly with the grommet. Then the install is the reverse. You can prime the fuel system to get fuel in the lines so you don't try to start it for 20 seconds, but I don't have my manual handy to look up the connector in the engine bay and the point to connect.
Hope this helps,

Tim Benton

30 MINUTES?!?!?!

I think it took me 10...thing's easy, and straight forward. Once you pull your stock one, look at the RP one, and it will all make sense...STRAIGHT BOLT IN.

What about priming the pump? I can't imagine it's a good idea to try to start it with no fuel in the pump. How do I prime that pump?

To prime the fuel system, you need a paperclip. Just open your small black diagnostic box in your engine compartment, connect the ground and fp (fuel pump) points, and turn your key to the on postions for ~15-30 seconds. Thats it.

Yes! you should hear slightly. When sitting in driver seat you should hear the buzzing sound of the fuel pump from behind you.

my install

Ok, I just installed my new Denso pump (the one Jason sells on the RX7store)
Oddity number one: the pump that was in the car was a denso...is that the brand Mazda used?

physically It installed fine, no problems.

Problem one: gas guage doesn't work...what did I do?
I opened it back up and wiggled the wires connected to the plunger and stuff but it still doens't work.

Oddity number two: I don't hear the new fuel pump
I didn't hear the old one, and I was expecting to hear this one. Is that strange? should I hear it? Should I be concerned?

My gas guage didn't work that well to begin with...when I filled it up, it didn't read full, and when it was 'half empty' I could only put in 6 gallons. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? (after I get the gas guage working?)

it sounds like your float on the end of the wire was not on tight and it probably fell off when you took out the pump and is floating in the gas tank. your gauge will read 0 if it is not on. pm if you need a pic.

It took me at least an hour but that was only because I lost a very little part that was helping hold the pump in place and had to make one. About hearing the pump...I heard mine for a few days but then the noise went away. I heard they were very loud...NOT the case.

I NEVER heard my pump. I didn't prime it either. Just put it in, started it up, and drove it away.

My gas gauge didn't work either. One time, the plastic float piece came off. Another time, the metal INSIDE of the tank got bent out of place, so I reached in there, pushed it to the right, put the pump back in and now my gas gauge works fine.

I THOUGHT I heard something from the back. Turned out it was the power antenna going up.

The float was still on there, I took it all out again to check it and it seemed to be operational (at least mechanically)
....
The gas guage is way below 0 the arm is sitting as low as it will go.

Yep, Mazda uses a lot of Nippon Denso parts (as do most of the Japanese carmakers). The upgrade is just a higher flow model.

No, the Nippon Denso is a good quality, well-made quiet pump. Why would you WANT to hear the fuel-pump?

I didn't 'want' to hear the fuel pump, but all the people that had posted seemed to say that I would hear it, and Ididn't know if it was a cause for alarm if I didn't, because I was expecting to.
That is all. I don't mind not hearing it, as long as it is working correctly.
