3rd gen engines

is it possible to order a whole new 3rd gen rx-7 engine from your local mazda dealership? if so, how much and how muc hs it he labor? and if not, you guys/gals know any site or shops that sells 3rd gen engines? and another question, if i buy, lets say, 120000 mile rx, and replace the engine with a new or low mileage engine, what about the rest of the car? how would the tranny be? and everything else?
so if i get a 120000 mile rx, what would i need to replace? i know i'm gonna replace the engine, but what else? thanks for all your input.

I'm in the same boat as you are... so damn hard to find an FD in good condition these days... seems like i'll end up doing the same thing you will. Buying a high mileage FD then start rebuilding that baby from the ground up... meaning that it will be garage for awhile. I don't think you'll find a brand-new 13B over here in the US. I've been looking around... how much would it be to import the 99 spec from Japan? Anyone done it?

a new engine + install will run you anywhere from 4000 to 6500(give or take).

Actually what you are getting from Malloy Mazda (or any Mazda dlr, but Malloy has the best price) is a Factor Remaufactured 13brew. They generally have new Rotor Housings, Lapped Used or New Side Housings, Used reconditioned Rotors & E-shafts, with all new Seals, and Bearings. You could order a factory new motor from Japan (or I think you can get NEW build motors from Mazda Motorsports) But I am guessing the will cost close to $6,000 in the crate + shipping, customs, etc.
The problem with getting a NEW build motor is they have to meet Smog requirements as of the date of Manufacture, and no Rotary has been EPA certified for sale (for use on public roads) in the US since Dec 1995. That's why MAZDA dealers in the US can NOT offer NEW rotary motors for sale. Mazda Motorsports can offer new motors for COMPETITION (not for use on public roads) use Only.

There was a buy of brand new (from the factory) in Japan motors, on the big list about 6 months ago. It was John Duff that organized the buy of 3 motors. I forgot how much he asked (I think around $3700), not that much more than a reman. If anyone gets a price from Mazdacomp, can you post it? It's good info.

instead of going through all that hassle, buy your high mileage 3rd gen, check the compression...and if it's low...pull out the engine and send it to a reputable shop for a rebuild. By rebuilding the existing engine before it detonates or before something else breaks, you might be able to salvage both rotor housings, rotors and e-shaft as long as they are well within spec. It'll save money and you'll also have the security of having a good long lasting engine.

There's a few importers who'll ship jdm engines...it's a little pricey, there is no warranty, and they are used...so it can be gamble.

nice screen name btw

I would agree to have the motor looked at by someone who knows rotary motors a comp test isn't a bad idea but doesn't always tell the whole story on rotaries. If you had to get a new motor get a rebuild let me give pineapple racing a call, let him know Sean over in chicago sent you.I've got two of their motors here and can tell you the service is great Rob loves what he does and it shows. I've yet to hear one bad thing about them, and they offer a five year warranty I don't think even mada will offer that on their new ones.
