2nd gear crunch

Hello everyone,
I'm looking at a 94 rx7 with 60,000 miles. The only problem is that when going into 2nd gear, it crunches and is difficult to get into. Does anyone know what could be the problem and a solution to the problem?
Thank you very much, all information is very appreciated.

Yeah that's what i thought but, i test drove it and it seemed to do it in 2nd, every other gear is fine. It's just a little difficult to get into. Does anyone know how much it would cost to rebuild the transmission and what's involved?
Thank you very much.

Lots of labor r&r trany and then ripping apart the case. Most all the rotary shops will do it for you. If you cant R&R the trans yourself I would say your are looking at a 1300 dollar bill for it.

A basic bearings/synchros job from a place like KD Rotary will run almost $1000 plus labor to remove and replace it.

Unfortunately your 2nd may also need a new 2nd gear and/or clutch sleeve. That can add a couple hundred extra $$.

I find that the 1-2 shift goes smoother if I wag the shifter into center neutral before pulling it into 2nd. Dunno why, but it seems to synchronize perfectly.

very common issue. check if the car has a quickshifter fitted - as this can accentuate the problem (ask me how I know...). It should be fine once it had warmed up - if it isn't then you've got a bigger problem.

a good synthetic oil is your first port of call.

Yup, my 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are quite notchy, mostly when cold. I started using Royal Purple in the trans and shifting improved a LOT.

Thankfully my 5th gear syncro is still alive and well.

When I had my original Mazda OEM trans lube, 1st-2nd-gear shifts were OK. I then changed to Valvoline synthetic 75W-90 GL5, and 1st-2nd-gear shifts got very difficult in cold weather. I finally put in NEO 75W-90HD synthetic, and it's better than it ever was. Many other people had similar experiences.

My point here is that the type and manufacturer of the lube can make BIG difference.
